[Q] Longest ban ever?

I know this may seem like a trivial question, but simply what is the longest ban ever given to a nation in the history of NS forums without it extending to a DEAT?

I was looking for a specific time.

I also don't see why they use DEAT so often rather than that.

Delete on sight is basically permaban.

That's what posters get when it's clear that the escalating warnings, bans and deletions don't get them to stop whatever problematic behaviors we have been trying to help them change.

There is a schedule, as it were, of corrections:

unofficial warnings -- aka knock it offs
official red-text warnings. They go *** Warned for $specific behavior in specific instance ***
Short term ban: 1 day
Short term ban: 3 day
Short term ban: 1 week
Ban: 3 weeks
Deletion

After a number of deletions, the DOS discussion begins, and if it's clear to the mod team that the player refuses to change, they are permanently disinvited rom the site.

However, the severity of the infraction, or a past history with other accounts, can get the chain of escalation jumped.

Apologies if this counts as spamming moderation, but what about IP banning? Is that a thing on here? Or is DOS the worst you can get?

Apologizes if counts as spam, but what about other cases that would have a history of communications getting revoked due to unsavoury circumstances at one instant.

What are the guidelines behind this? And how many times would one person whom continues such behaviour in order to receive it? Just curious.

Thanks.

We cannot comment on specific tools in our kits, but in general, DOS is just that. We see you, we delete you. We have multiple tools to check on people and IP is just one of them.

It would depend on a number of factors so I don't really have an exact answer to your question. Regardless, unless time is of the essence, such revocations happen only after consultation with the group.

On the order of years, but it's non-punitive; we do this when we discover players to be under the age of 13. As the Terms & Conditions state, players must be at least 13 years of age to access the forums.

Random Joe Summer Nazi or Random Joe Pornspammer, generally. There are a handful of infractions so severe that they qualify for instant-DOS status and coincidentally also tend to fall in the "contact law enforcement" category as well (for example: extremely violent/plausible threats, child porn, that sort of unpleasantness.)

Over the site's history there have been plenty of Random Joe Trolls who got to DOS instantly or within a day.

I thought it was whenever the forums shutdown temporarily, they feel like you’ve been banned from El dorado.

Some people are sick. Especially those who posted child porn here.

There was a guy on another forum I'm in who did that. DMed it to the mods and several prominent members. Fortunately, it was a few years before I joined, so I never had to deal with that.

The number of DOSes that have successfully been "appealed" - in the sense that we have knowingly allowed a DOS to return after they contacted us many years later - can be counted on one hand. There isn't, therefor, really a "shortest" DOS status; DOS orders are effectively permanent. The few appeals we've granted are the exception, not the rule. Worthy of note: of those handful that have contacted us about having their DOS overturned, and us agreeing to, they are duly informed they remain on exceptionally thin ice, and as little as a single infraction of consequence (say, flaming someone compared to gravedigging) can result in them being DOS'd again - after which they can never really expect us to grant any sort of appeal, all things considered.

It's a rarity, but it happens. Unless it's been publicly posted, you also aren't entitled to know whom it may have been executed against.

I like that. Or maybe the Eternal Waiting Room in Beetlejuice.

To be fair, some probably genuinely move on from NS.

Which is healthy (moving on from a place where you're unwelcome generally is healthy)

We (mods and players) won't notice though. Because of the very nature of moving on :p

I'm surprised they wouldn't just declare that person DOS.
