I think anyone that claims that the Mods here overmoderate are habitual offenders who have gotten hit over the head with that banhammer of Reppy's several times. Or are from websites that allow them to do whatever they want without punishment.

I wouldn't prefer an unmoderated forum (that opinion has changed from previously), but I do think that often moderator punishments can be a little heavy-handed, and the flaming/trolling rules are taken a little too far. 'not adding anything to the discussion' (like political nicknaming, autistic screeching) is a little stupid a justification to result in bans in my opinion.

My general impression of mods have been rather good...but then I have had I think 1 unofficial warning, and that was for pic spam. I have had disagreements with mods, and still do not really agree with one of the ways their rules are set up. Namely I am talking about discussing rulings in moderation. I can understand to some extent why discussing specific moderation rulings is not allowed, since that would clutter up moderation. On the other hand, I sometimes feel that we need to be able to point to specific examples when discussing something about moderation (or as has rarely been the case discuss the implications of a specific ruling since they can be more far reaching).

The idea that I'd need to apply some form of advanced Turing test to the entire Moderation team in an attempt to identify it just sounds horrifying. :lol2:

Ah, but the test needs to be done under lab conditions, we can't determine it with accuracy when the Mods are all sat in their native environment of NationStates. ;)

If I recall correctly, the thing that convinced [v] that mods were needed was pornspam (or something of a similarly rule-breaking nature) that ended up going unaddressed for a number of hours.

All joking aside, I’m working on neural network development IRL, and honestly I think somethings could definitely be more automated (still maintaining human over site). But I’m not about to volunteer the time to make it happen.

Besides neural network’s understanding text/tabular data is something I’m aware of but not where I work.

I mean even if it isn't a "Moderator" as such, it could just be an automated program that trawls the forums or RMBs looking for certain keywords and posting behavior, assigns them a "score", and automatically flags them in the Moderator toolkit for review if a certain score threshold is reached. It could gradually build up a picture of what trolling/flaming/harassment looks like, based on samples provided by the Moderation team. Of course none of that would replace the manual reporting by players through a GHR or in Moderation, nor would it replace actual Moderators, but it might be able to flag up stuff that may be missed.

I would not be the least bit surprised if they, like a lot of PB sites, ignore those rules as much as the PB staff let them.
