Mod/admin fear

Postby Aldenian Empire » Wed May 23, 2018 2:05 pm

I am always afraid of admins and mods because it feels like if I say something even mildly rude even if not intended to be rude I might get banned or deleted.
anyone else got the same fear and can anyone help those who are afraid?
I'm very sorry if this is on the wrong thread and if it is please lock it and telegram me so I can move it to whay would be a more appropriate place for this thread so it can be deleted on the old forum should it happen.

Yes. Read the bible that they call rules and after a while and after a few warnings for made up rules you'll get the hang of it.

Don't worry mate.

The admins I have to admit are not always the best. But they have stopped many threads that spread hate. Don't worry. If you feel threatened by them, maybe you should contact the.

Mate, as long as you avoid the autistic screeching meme, don't post in non-discussion/question moderation threads you're not involved in or adding evidence to, and generally don't be a dick, you should be fine. At worst, you might get a knock it off.

It's worth discussing, if only to reassure you that mods/admins are not unreasonable and capricious folks out to get you.

Pretty much, the rules boil down to, "Don't be a dick." If you keep that in mind, you really don't have to worry about running afoul of the rules.

I'm afraid of the mods as well. I made several effortposts and was then reported by some disreputables for 'trolling' and got banned. When I tried to find out what in my posts was trolling I got no response. Now I have no idea where the boundaries are or what I can even post. Very stressful.

The mods and admins have made some decisions and rulings that I have disliked but overall I see no reason why your every little action should be riddled by "fear" of them. The rules boil down to don't be an unnecessary asshole and don't be stupid. If you follow that, you'll usually be safe. Just read the OSRS and review previous modly rulings in the moderation forum to have some idea of a base line.

Honestly we have a LOT of players who don't end up getting crosswise of Moderation. It just all comes down to being civil. Go at it hammer and tongs if you wish, but... Hrmm...

Best advice I can say to you. The OSRS is there and of course we always say that the rules simply boil down to don't be a dick. But I would put it another way. The rules really boil down remember the other person is a person. Treat them as such. That's what it's about. Attack their ideas, not them, and you'll be fine.
To those who feel, life is a tragedy. To those who think, it's a comedy.

Any content that is:

The only reason the OSRS is longer than that is that some players insist on having everything spelled out for them.

A large amount of offsite activity on NS is mostly due to fear, paranoia, and distrust of the staff. The only way to make sure you have a spotless record is to never post on an RMB or on the onsite forums.

I've lurked the Moderation forum since 2014. The mod/admin team is good, especially considering they're unpaid volunteers... with just a few slip-ups per week. This ranges from a weird ruling that the person ruled against probably should have appealed, to textbook cases that aren't ruled actionable for weird or unstated reasons. Then, the there's absolutely bizarre. These are normally the result of thread trawls where an overworked staffer has to hand out a bunch of rulings at once, but sometimes they're just standard reports.

The entire appeals process can be spotty too. The staff can be too content to agree with the original ruling, no matter what the ruling was. When I see a ruling reversed, I shouldn't be as surprised as I am. Even if the mods do contradict one another during the appeals process, I've seen them still upheld the original ruling on occasion (which defeats the point of the appeals process)

Yes, I know, staffers, these are all "individual cases" and judged "case-by-case". The problem is that the minority of the bad you do sticks out, especially in cases where public opinion goes opposite of the ruling. As a result, you guys aren't seen as the volunteer enforcers of the site by the majority of its users. Instead, you're seen as the tyrants of it.

Sorry, I don't have a concrete solution. I just hope there is one, because it honestly sucks if this is the situation y'all are stuck in.

I've managed to get out of trouble, except for 1 VoM, an unofficial warning, and a locked thread.

And all of those happened in 2014-2016. I have had a spotless record for 2 years.

Since this is not [Q/R],

Nah, just be civil and don't attack the poster or the user. Debate itself is good, but just be a nice person while you're at it. And like Fris and many others have said, read the OSRS too.

The Mods are also rational, mind you. If unjust, there are second or third opinions you can ask for, and only once I got warned because I was irrelevant in a [R] post (that was totally my fault.)

Stay safe, and enjoy NS! :D

In a way yes, but only because of other offsite forums I've been on had the mods treat me and others like total shit. Thankfully I can say that the NS mods are not that bad in comparison.

If you can just understand the intent behind the One Rule ("Don't be a jerk"), then you really shouldn't have any trouble staying within the rules. It honestly befuddles me why some people seem unable to follow them. Yes, the mods have their flaws and biases (including some rules that I think are enforced inconsistently), but really, they are nice people! Just read the rules if necessary, err on the side of caution when it comes to your behavior, and learn what not to talk about or do here. The mods are not power-tripping (except in Reppy's old BMOH series), are constantly held accountable by [violet] and Max, and have probably been accused of every bias under the sun.

I've been here for almost 3.5 years now, and have one warning to my name- for spamming Moderation. That one happened because I saw someone make a new thread for a spam report. I advised them to take their report to the Spam Report Megathread instead. Unbeknownst to me (since I never actually looked at it), the post being reported was a suicide threat. Since it's apparently Moderation policy (at least then) to treat all suicide threats as genuine, any user reporting them as spam would be warned for spamming Moderation. And yes, some mod did say this outright in the forum, if memory serves. Since I told someone to take their report to the Spam Report Megathread...I was considered to be in violation of this policy, and the same mod applied an official warning to my record. I never appealed it, though now I think I should have.

Anyway...just don't be a jerk. Learn what is and isn't acceptable here. You'll have little reason to fear the mods if you do that- they really are reasonable people and don't warn or ban players for no reason.
If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. | Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

It helps having an established site where you can look at a few years of someone's behavior before you trust them with mod powers.

Everyone gives "don't be a dick", but since that doesn't seem to cover it as many people don't consider a lot of meme type stuff (re: autistic screeching mess recently), make posts relevant.

If you post in a discussion thread, make your post an actual discussion/debate. A longer post with sources and examples is less likely to get an unpopular opinion warned than a one liner with your controversial opinion. Aside from keeping people civil, most moderation action seems geared to ensuring that the forum is used for it's intended purpose. Actual roleplay in roleplay forums, real, serious discussion in places like general. They are harsher than just about any other forum I've seen, but generally fair and as a result you get actual political discussion and debate with facts and sources as opposed to the spam and ad hominem found on most online forums.

tl;dr: Don't be a dick, post in a productive manner
