Would I be allowed to sell NationStates merchandise and pay the website a comission? The comission of coarse will go either toward NationStates itself and/or to Max Barry

Max controls the site's finances and intellectual property rights -- NationStates name, logos, etc. Those are not delegated to mods. So Hirota's right about that.

That said... I don't know how much you've developed this idea, but half-baked business offers are kind of like self-nominations to be a mod.
