Quoth the raven, "Jolt is nevermore"

Postby Fartsniffage » Sun Feb 07, 2010 7:41 pm

In this thread there is some discussion about the old posts hosted on Jolt and what will happen to them.

I may have the ability to host the archieve in case Jolt decides to be their usual annoying selves and delete them but I wanted permission from the powers that be before I went to the effort.

Mods only please.

It's long been on record that players are encouraged to archive any and everything they think they might need/want/feel like pack-rat'ing.
To those who feel, life is a tragedy. To those who think, it's a comedy.

True, but there is a slight difference between saving and hosting.

Don't want to get in any hot water over distributing other peoples work.

Uh, no. That would be a rather blatant copyright infringement.

I figured that.

I guess what I'm asking for is permission. According to the TOS everything posted on NS belongs to Max so with his nod it wouldn't be an issue. I wouldn't be profiting from it nor attempting to pass anything of as my own work, I just find myself in a postition to help out and figured I'd offer.

Actually, user-created content is still owned by the poster, but the admins are granted a "non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual license to reproduce, distribute, transmit, and publicly display such content".
If you see I've made a mistake in my wording or a factual detail, telegram me and I'll fix it. I'll even give you credit for pointing it out, if you'd like.

We have the ability to restore in read-only form should Jolt delete everything. So I think we're covered. But it is extraordinary that you have a 6GB backup. You should hang on to that in case we get hit by a meteor or something.

Violet: Ermarian took "archive the bits you don't want to lose" to the logical extreme.

So there now exists at least one complete backup of the entire NS forums, as hosted on Jolt. I presume achieved by unleashing a crawler on the site.

If I had more disk space, I would have done the same.

Edit: Actually, I do have the disk space. Hmm...

It's possible you (the mods) have already seen this archiving crawler, as I wrote it for Erastide a year ago when the move was imminent and we didn't know how Jolt would handle it. The only real change since then is that jolt.co.uk had to be replaced by joltonline.com...
