[Question] How far can IC go?

Postby Marxist-Leninist Germany » Fri Feb 06, 2015 6:33 pm

I know II is generally considered an IC forum and does not really reflect OOC opinions, but sometimes it seems like the lines blur. In this thread for example, it seems like the IC is simply a thin cover in order for a few people to express personal hateful and inflammatory beliefs and resort to distatstefull inflammatory words without it technically being trolling. This isn't the first time a thread like this has popped up, and I am just curious as to when, if ever, IC can be actionable.

The line, in this context, is very thin. In the case of many, RP is a way to express their beliefs or how a story they think is interesting to develop. The line is, however, drawn when they cross actual forum rules. This can be seen when players pass the PG-13 rule; such as heavily descriptive sex scenes or intentional graphic posts that are simple gore porn. The line also exists when people are using it, as you are possibly suggesting, to troll opposite players; an example of this is if a player is specifically making it out to be intentionally harmful - like say, crossing the first example or making sly joke references. That line is harder to tell and takes someone a special skill (Mods and other seasoned writers can usually tell the differences) to tell when they are either bullshitting or being serious. Mods, in this case, have a tool that references all noted past experiences, which helps them.

To answer your question more in depth, however, writing is protected as fiction. As long as the story does not cross the mention lines above, or other forum rules, they are usually left untouched as they are used to tell stories. Be it intentional to show disagreement or not, a player has the right to RP a story they feel is good as long as they abide by the forum's rules. The OP's rules for the thread also count, but that's not really the question here. To sum it up once more: As long as the rules are not violated, intentional harm is not detected, and the OP accepts it - RPs that are graphic may proceed. I as a writer usually leave a warning to show that the post and/or thread has graphic content - a courtesy most don't use. This is one of those topics that is hard to make clear since it is usually situational rather then blanketed.

And then there's times when you're wrong. Such as this one.

Sometimes threads don't get reported, and so some go away with the impression that they can excuse nearly anything as an IC venture. This is not the case. Yes, you can present any number of usually questionable, even unpopular, or rather heinous things as a legitimate IC thread. But you have to understand where the lines are, and know how to write it in such a way that it doesn't cross lines, and doesn't look like an excuse to get away with picking on this, that, or the other group, or forwarding some sort of malicious intent. We tend to come down fairly hard on that.

As a note, disclaimers and spoilers and such do not excuse going too far in your writing.

Although I am against homosexuality as a Christian and I believe homosexuality should be criminalized, I do not support killing of homosexuals.

I do however believe it is a disease/sin that can be cured.
