This seems strangely familiar to me... is this against the rules? To have a nation that's quite literally the same as a RL country?

Yes, but looking at the signature it very much remends me of a certain DOS nation with a penchant for colonies.

Yes, it is. Check this thread,

Summary: Using Real Earth geography is fine. Using the shape of Real Earth countries is fine. Using Real Earth populations is fine. Using the actual Real Earth countries (culture, history, et al), and thus essentially being a carbon copy of a Real Earth country, is not.
