Looks like we'll need trigger warnings for posts containing trigger warnings soon.

I don't see what the huge problem is with them, though.

No, we really won't. As has been stated repeatedly. Not that it keeps people from continuing to argue a non-issue. Welcome to NS debating. ;)

Perhaps anyone who uses a trigger warning should be required to TG Blazedtown, to warn him about the trigger warning, so it doesn't trigger him.

Actually, for text one character equals 1 and 4 bytes under UTF-8 for computers to process and store.

Under ASCII it's just 1 byte.

The title of a thread alone should be enough indicator.

But you know what if you feel material might cause a person to have a negative flash back or something....just spoiler the damn whatever and label it as a trigger warning.

Just my opinion on it.

I don't really see the point, especially since there's only been a single thread with a trigger warning. Yes, trigger warnings are a bit pointless since the thread's title is usually a dead giveaway of what the thread's about, but I wouldn't consider them ban worthy. It appears some of you guys are making a mountain out of a molehill.

Coffee Cakes wrote:I mildly support the ban, but if we're gonna ban trigger warnings, then we'd need to ban "check your privilege" posts, too.
Which I support in theory, but in practice... it just seems rather tacky, a bit.

How many non-ironic 'check your privilege' posts are there on NS? Not that many.

Its hardly an insult to your intellectual ability, its a common fucking courtesy to others.

Yes, NSG doesn't revolve around me. No, it doesn't revolve around people so fundamentally different to me that it is reasonable to assume that, given the typical thread title in general is as lacking in clarity as "security guard beats student in wheelchair", they cannot determine that potentially triggering material will be in there.

Which brings us back to the major point, when thread titles aren't so clear (see the "My problem with feminism" example, although such a thread would probably be locked for being to bloggy these days) trigger warnings do have a point and using them in situations where this is not so merely devalues the concept.

Oh, and perfect predicting is not needed and is also impossible. Consider that a misrepresentation of my argument to reduce it to a form more easily dismissed. Also, perhaps pay close attention to how I say what I say. I am perfectly aware why trigger warnings are used, hence "reflexively opposed".

Have we all forgotten that trigger warnings are not and will not be mandatory, or are we griping just for the sake of griping?

Come on Kat, gripping is what NSG excels at. I mean, isn't this thread proof of that? People, mainly the OP, making an issue about, well, a non-issue? ;)

Hell, what "triggers" would be on a NationStates post anyway?

If a rape victim read a thread about rape or something.

Also, there's aboslutly no discussion here, so can it just be locked down?

No, I think he's on to something, though the exact phrasing was a bit off. The conversation boils down to:
"I think there should be a ban on trigger warnings!"
"But almost nobody is using them."
"...Well, they might. And that makes me angry!"
"But it's not really doing any harm."
"I don't like it. It makes me feel insulted on a personal level."
"That the OP wanted to be considerate?"
"They had an ulterior motive. We don't need 'em! "
And I feel like all the meaningful points have been made.

That's it.

Image

As of now, no trigger warnings. No 'check your' bs. No snark. No 'sauce' posts. No chipping at 'logic' in religion threads. Hell, no religion threads. No anti-religion threads. No abortion threads. No gun threads. No potentially controversial news threads. No democrat threads. No republican threads. No libertarian threads. No green threads. No 'what if' threads. No tech threads. No international threads. No language threads. No pointing out typos. No pointing out lack of grammar skills. No using veiled insults to poke your opponent while toeing the rules line. No 'feels' statements. No griping. No grousing. No referencing anything off-site. And no goram fun.

And while I'm on it, no 'anything I may have missed here' to boot.
