Flamebait (Czardas / Mods Only)

Postby Parthenon » Mon Oct 19, 2009 12:37 pm

This poster seems to have some deep seated hatred of me and feels the need to post the same nonsensical request multiple times...
(Apparently no one laughed the first time he said it so it required another go around.)

Hey, wtf? Do we get to put (x Moderator Only) tags on?

As fun as I can imagine that being...

I can't see it being allowed.

"Mods only" tags are permitted. I've never seen "[specific mod] only" tags and I assume they're not in common use.

Callisdrun's comments do not appear to be actionable. Calling for a user to be banned is generally poor form -- you're not supposed to tell mods how to do their jobs -- but no rules prohibit it as far as I know. Nonetheless, it's probably better if he doesn't do that.

Singling out a poster numerous times in the span of 10 posts isn't harassment? He obviously is looking for a reaction of some sort.

REQUESTING SECOND OPINION.

Callisdrun is most likely not being serious in his post, albeit, it isn't a good idea to call for a certain user to be ban. I do not see the malicious intent needed for it. The gentle warning given by Czardas is sufficient.

REQUESTING SECOND OPINION.

Czardas already asked for second (and third) opinions in IRC before posting here. We agreed that Callisdrun is probably trying to get a rise out of you, but also that he was probably also not entirely serious, so we were disinclined to redtext for it. Czardas posted to the effect that Callisdrun should knock it off, and that's as far as we'll go unless he continues and/or escalates the exchange.
"I am the Elder King: Melkor, first and mightiest of the Valar, who was before the world, and made it. The shadow of my purpose lies upon Arda, and all that is in it bends slowly and surely to my will. But upon all whom you love my thought shall weigh as a cloud of Doom, and it shall bring them down into darkness and despair."

He's also obviously not being serious, at least in the two posts you linked. If this continues excessively, you might have a better case.

Edit: nevermind about second opinions. *types too slow*

Thank you all for the swift explanation and review. I must however take a moment to note that only three pages earlier in the thread the user was making similar statements as illustrated by the following quotation.

viewtopic.php?p=792549&f=16#p792549

This seems to be a recurring trend with this user, hopefully the initial response will nip it in the butt before it gets out of hand.

Excuse my wading in here, but isn't 'he wasn't being serious' is a piss-poor excuse? I'm not commenting on this particular situation, more in general.. If not being serious means you can get away with breaking the rules (mods agreed that poster x was trying to get a reaction.. i.e baiting) there would be chaos.

Due to the recent mod promotion (and promotions to be) people's emotions are bubbling over like they do at the office Christmas party. No one is wearing a lampshade yet, but some coworkers have been spotted doing some heavy petting. Some things are being said that probably wouldn't be uttered in normal working circumstances. A polite reminder of the consequences of doing certain things to or with people you need to deal with every day should be enough. If it carries over past the party, I'm sure steps will be taken.

*puts on lampshade*

A cogent point. Also, I had rather forgotten about the post linked to in Parthenon's latest post, and it frames Callisdrun's later comments in a decidedly different light.

While my language in this post should have omitted the word "pros," (since, after all, reasons why someone should/could be a good mod was part of the reason for my leaving the announcement open in the first place) it does quite clearly contain the warning that the thread's purpose was not to 'bash' candidates; and that reasons to refrain from modding someone would be made at our--rather than the public's--discretion.

We've talked it over and I believe the consensus to be that Callisdrun ignored my caveat and will shortly be issued a redtext warning for baiting.
