[R] Requesting thread lock

Postby The Ice States » Fri Jun 07, 2024 3:56 pm

Good morning,

I'd like to ask as OP if this thread could be locked: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=548275. The draft was placed on hold in May yet has received nearly a full page of posts since, up to today. This is a bit annoying when the draft is not being pursued.

Edited: I have been advised that locks on request are only done for RP forums. The Security Council does not count as such.

Now the moderation team really IS Godmoding.
Step 1: One-Stop Rules Shop. Step 2: ctrl+f. Step 3: Type in what you saw in modbox. Step 4: Don't do it again.

It seems there's precedent, eg [1], for locking WA threads on request. The clarification by Sedge there does not seem to apply either; this has nothing to do with preventing criticism of myself, it is to prevent the annoyance of this thread being constantly bumped to the top when it is not being pursued, particularly when the commentary is generally not substantive or helpful as in the majority of the second page. Could I request a second opinion (if we are to call it that) on this?

The thread will not be locked. As a matter of course, there is no thread ownership in the Security Council. If it's annoying that it keeps getting bumped, that's slightly unfortunate, but it's necessary to not create a situation where we stifle debate on a resolution simply because an author doesn't want to see it.

Thanks for this; as a follow up would the precedent mentioned earlier apply only to the GA, accordingly?

If your question is "where does thread ownership apply", then that's covered in the OSRS: viewtopic.php?p=16394954#p16394954

A player has no right to request a thread lock for their threads outside those bounds. Threads in the GA and the SC are often draft and debate threads. Like United Calanworie said, we do not want to shut down a debate simply because it is inconvenient or unpleasant to the author, if it remains on-topic.

Thanks for this, however it still doesn't exactly answer my question. To be more direct, is this a departure from the precedent set last year that GA threads can generally be locked on request?

If'n you don't mind me popping back in real quick. I believe the key factor is in whether the lock is intended to stifle ongoing debate or if there is another valid reason that it ought to be locked. It is important to note in your counterexample that the poster requesting the lock was doing so because the discussion in the thread had --putting it lightly-- become severely uncomfortable for them from a moral standpoint.

Considering the circumstances, I'd say the lock was most certainly warranted in that regard.

I think that generally, yes, we want to move away from that kind of precedent in the SC. The GA is more nuanced and locks can be addressed on a case-by-case basis there, but the SC by and large is an extension of GP — whether or not that’s the way it should be is another question entirely, but it’s definitely the way it is and as a result, thread OPs are severely limited in their powers there. If a thread OP was able to ban all raiders from commenting on a liberation proposal, for example, there would be no debate. Similarly, one could post a thread, have six or seven friends comment in support, then request it locked, killing all debate. These are things we wish to avoid.

Thanks to both, this does address my question satisfactorily.
