For what it's worth, I tried logging in with my OpenID, but it didn't work. :?

I don't know how you tried, 'cause NS never gives the option to sign in via OpenID.

I simply tried the normal way. I was figuring, "Why else on earth would they have these OpenID options?"

It's to let you sign in as Glen-Rhodes on nationstates ( http://www.nationstates.net/nation=glen-rhodes ) on another website, using some OpenID server that nationstates forwards to :)
