List of regions

Postby West-Fascististan » Tue May 19, 2009 11:02 pm

Would it not be better to list the regions according to size than to list them alphabetically? As it is now, I have to look through a lot of pointless regions to find the big ones.

It would, but it's non-trivial to implement.

At a glance, but it's probably all sorts of potentially game-breaking programming hoops to jump through

"Unofficial NationStates Region Directory" by Goobergunchia.
Ok it's old, it's from 2004, but it contains some of Ballotonia's list of largest regions as recent as april 2006.. He has a script that rank regions in order of size. Don't know if there are any more recent lists.

It would be if we were backed by a DB, but we're not. It means adding a script that keeps cycling through all regions, loading them to check their size, then storing the sorted rank somewhere, then adding a function to reference that. Which is not the hardest thing in the world, but it's a much lower cost-benefit than it would be if it just meant adding "ORDER BY size".

Um.. I'm just going to interject something though it appears that its probably a moot point.

On the NS World Adjustments Thread, a popular idea was to arrange the region listing by regional power ranking - considering the regional power ranking does little at the moment (at least it appears purely cosmetic to the players, I don't know if it effects the hidden mechanics behind the WA or not), having the 'regional power' ranking your region, would give it a lot of significance.

I'm always plugging these guys, but that's because it works: http://nsdossier.texasregion.net/

If you want to sort regions by size, click on the "--Custom Dossiers--" drop-down box on the right hand side. You'll see "--World Listings--" and then a list of things like "Regions100", "Regions50", and so on.

Regions100 lists the regions with populations of 100+ nations
Regions50 lists the regions with 50-100 nations
etc.

While the number of nations in a given region is always up-to-date, the rankings are not precise - the lists must only update every once in a while. Still, it's a simple, convenient way to find the largest regions pretty quickly.
