Delete function for the thread creators?

Postby Mt Id » Mon May 18, 2009 11:24 am

I was wondering if there is a way to make it so that the thread creators can delete posts made in their thread so that when spammers come in they don't have to bother one of the mods to come and handle it for them. It could really come in handy and save everybody some time.

I'd rather not have this. This is too much open for abuse to delete posts just because you don't like the content of it.

Then you report the abuse to the mods. So instead of the constant spamming reports the mods get they'll get maybe one or two abuse reports. Still saves time.

I don't think mere posters should get the modly power to delete posts. What Blaat said would happen, probably.

They'd only have the mod powers inside their own threads. And its not like they could edit the posts themselves or anything, they can just delete it or not.

How often do we have spammers here?

Exactly. So I don't think it's wise to implement a troublesome solution to a problem that does not exist.

If you have good reasons to need to have some posts deleted, you can ask the mods - there is a reason they exist.
There is a line most people say they will never cross. It is usually something they have done long ago when they thought no one was watching.

So they could delete every post they disagree with.

Which stiffles any healthy discussion.

And then, what's the point of having a discussion at all

For roleplaying people are allowed to request deletion of any posts in a thread they have created. Anywhere else, that request is not granted unless the post is deemed spam or rulebreaking by a moderator. I don't see that changing.

Ah, the RP forums. The OP hadn't specified that, so I simply assumed all forums. And it would be a really bad thing for say... General. No clue about the RP forums though, I hardly go there...

A further problem is that, unlike the vB used on jolt which just flags the posts as deleted, phpBB, AFAIK, moves deleted posts into a separate "recycle bin" subforum, which makes the deletions invisible and impractically hard to restore.
I'm not sure if phpBB 3 has mods for a different behavior, though, I've only worked with the 2.x, but it's generally hard to change. Although it could have an IPB-like option of hiding the posts.

Either way it's more trouble than it's worth. I see few situations where you really need to delete posts in your thread on a regular basis.

My apologies. I should have made that clear and you're quite right, in general that wouldn't work at all. And if the mods say it's not worth it, it's not worth it. Oh well.
