If it wasn't broken, it wouldn't be fixed. There are problems with the tax rate calculations. Capitalist economies have 100% tax rates. It is incredibly easy to end up at one of the extremes. The tax rate calculations certainly are broken.

I been trying for ages when I deal with the issues not to spend anymore as my tax rate was 100% now it been reduced. However I would like to be able to have some sort of a way of not letting my tax rate go back to the 100% ever again.

The game doesn't know all these roleplaying variables, understandably. Glen-Rhodes has a progressive taxation system, for example, yet the game doesn't reflect that the lowest tax rate would certainly not be anywhere near 77%!

Considering that Bears Armed is spending so much on education and law & order, it makes sense that at least some money is coming into the various governments. That 9% is total taxation, not just income taxation. To reconcile it, that 9% makes up customs duties and however the confederated clans collect taxes. :ugeek:

Oh sure, that fact I have no problem with: It's the fact that however the money is raised IC the game will display the source on my nation's page as 'income tax' to which I take exception...
Maybe, while re-coding is underway, the word "income" could simply be dropped from the relevant line?

(If the latter change has already been suggested & dismissed then I apologise for raising it again, but I don't have enough time left online today to read through the eight pages of posts that have been added to this thread since my own last post herein...)

Yes, I think the new calculator is a great idea. I've been trying so hard to get my tax back to a normal level, but it still states a ridiculously large amount because I have been quite socialist in the past. Fixing it would be great.

Yes Please!

I've been trying to reduce my tax rate for about a year with no sucess. Under the new system it would be 83% which seems far more reasonable given the efforts I've made.

Thanks again for all this feedback!

Northwest Slobovia wrote:1) What will the higher rate do to NWS's economy? It's a "powerhouse" now.

2) How will the increased tax spending affect the services my country provides? NWS already spends a lot of its (previously meager) state budget on education, which coupled with the big economy, seemed to be providing good services... will the people become more educated?

No, nothing will be affected besides the income tax number. It's a change in the algorithm that figures out how much your government services cost in tax. It's not changing the level of government services or anything like that. It will not alter your Economy rating.

The Most Glorious Hack wrote:

They must be doing something wrong. Last time I calculated my true tax rate, I was somewhere between -150% and -175%.

Still got a way to go, Hack! There are plenty of underlying rates below that. But they're still much less than I've seen the other way.

Bears Armed wrote:Maybe, while re-coding is underway, the word "income" could simply be dropped from the relevant line?

It's true that it's not really supposed to be specific to income tax, but rather the main form of taxation on citizens. It's a little tricky to move to an alternative, though, because we'd really need to break out individual and corporate tax rates, since in many nations those will be wildly divergent. Or convert to a % of GDP. So it's a change beyond the scope of this particular change. You could start a new thread on it if you like.

Copenhagen Metropolis wrote:Getting a 100% ITR is easy. Getting that AND a high GDP is hard. Getting both AND with high Defence expenditures is nearly impossible. But that's what I'm trying my best to achieve over the next couple of years (yes, it takes that long. One wrong move and your GDP is fucked. Getting it back on track will leave you even further behind as that will probably hurt you ITR). This new tax system would just ruin what I've been working towards for almost a year now.

Clearly a few nations want a 100% tax rate. It was mentioned earlier that nations that outlaw capitalism or otherwise get themselves into completely state-run economies should have 100% tax rates. (Skipping for the moment the debate about whether that rate is really 100% or 0%.) I think this makes sense, since there's no problem having your government collect more money than it needs. That's also a change beyond this particular scope, but feel free to start a new thread.

As stated in an earlier thread I support the new tax calculations. It's a bit of a shame that I would have to get rid of my planned economy to benefit though. Whilst I disagree with the above statement, I guess I could always RP a different tax rate based on the new calculation though.

So the monarchy effectively rules by decree. I have achieved this through answering issues in a certain way... Unfortunately I can’t remember what those issues were. That plus a little bit of RP. Anyway my point is it’s easy to have moderate to high political freedoms and still have absolute power, you just have to be creative.

Huh. That's a rather unique and, I must say, deliciously evil approach. *golfclap*

I believe that this change is a necessary thing.
First off, I hate having such a high tax rate... I feel awful for it.
Second, if you guys really want 100%, you can always answer issues. You'll be back up there within a week most.
Third, it gives us players who like lowering taxes (somewhat) an opportunity to decrease our tax rates.

I say go for it.
