A forum suggestion

Postby Dakini » Sun May 17, 2009 7:25 pm

Something I've encountered that's a bit annoying and wouldn't be too hard to fix (I think) is that when someone links something, it doesn't open a new window (or tab for me). It basically means that I have to hit back (possibly a number of times) instead of just closing the tab when I want to browse back to the forum, but I find it less convenient.
So if links would open a new window by default, this would be swell. :)

edit: dammit, I posted this in the wrong forum.

Yer, I generally prefer to have links open in a new tab.

<Beddgelert> if that were true, i'd never have woken up with pockets full of ketchup

I understand how it would be more convenient if it opened in a new tab automatically, but you are aware that you can just right-click any link and select "open in new tab", right? Okay, that's two clicks instead of one, but this is how I deal with all and any links I encounter so I don't have to worry about / remember how it is set as default on which webpge.

are all expressing the above view in an indiscernible cacophony

We'll also all vanish now for a while. So long and thanks for all the fish!

Use the middle mouse button.

New Window links are more trouble than they're worth.
There is a line most people say they will never cross. It is usually something they have done long ago when they thought no one was watching.

But we like being lazy.

I didn't know that. It is awesome.

Wow, this middle mouse button even works in Linux (Iceweasel browser). Awesome 8-)

It's pretty easy to open a link in a new tab or window if you want (control-click, or shift-click, or middle-click, or mouse gesture, or right-click + Open in new Tab/Window). If we made that the default, though, and you preferred to open links in the same window, that's not easy. So in the name of preserving user choice, I (somewhat) prefer defaulting to open-in-same-window.

Start a poll about it; I'm ready to be swayed by popular opinion. :)
