Yeah, sadly, due to the limitations of BBCode, our table codes are extremely basic.

Four years ago (in my Presidential horse-race thread, which involved a lot of tables full of polling results) I ran into problems with the [bgcolor=][/bgcolor] tag not being properly implemented on this server (which I noted at the time). Is there any hope of having that code implemented soon, so that the coming 2016 Presidential horse-race thread won't suffer from similar issues?

Remember, this is a feature that SHOULD already be working, because it's actually a part of the BBCode language.

No...that's not how it works at all.

These are the standard bbcodes: http://www.bbcode.org/reference.php
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode
https://www.phpbb.com/community/faq.php?mode=bbcode

If you mean "Background" which is a custom bbcode, it is implemented.

My text
Code: Select all
[background=blue][color=white]My text[/color][/background]

ASB,
It's part of standard HTML, but not BBCode. The Table BBCode is a custom code that Reppy threw together. For you to be able to use the BCGolor code within a table, it would have to be manually added into the Table code. I'm not sure what it would do to the existing codes that others are currently using, as it might break their varied codes within hundreds of thousands of threads.

I've seen discussions of [bgcolor] as a way of coloring table cells in a number of places on the web, which led me to believe that was a standard part of BBCode.

As for [background], that only works on a character-by-character basis. It doesn't let you simply color the cell background a single color.

Now, if there were a way to fix the length of a cell, then [background] would work just fine. But there's not.

Part of standard html? O_o;;; That's a style tag, it should not be a part of standard html, it should have been deprecated already. CSS provides more than enough to cover that.

It was deprecated as part of HTML 4.01.

https://www.w3.org/TR/html401/present/graphics.html

Not even part of standard html. We're now on HTML5, which was formally published in October 2014.

Using out of date HTML is not recommended. Browsers progress and newer browsers may not support compatibility for old websites.

Part of the difficulty of making things like background colors and all the other myriad things you can do with tables stems from the fact that tables + CSS provides a huge amount of customization options. BBCode, in contrast, does not; it's limited basically to one customizable variable (for instance, the options on the align tag, or the color tag.) That's the big reason that our table BBCode is so heavily limited; we lack a good way to translate the variety of variables from HTML/CSS into the far more limited BBCode. Putting a background fill in a specific table cell is something done via CSS attached to the table's tags (be it the main table, a row, or a specific cell's tag,) it's not a separate piece of HTML. The closest thing we have is the background BBCode, but that can't do a background for a section of a table, it can only put a background on a specific slice of text.

Not really something we can fix, unfortunately. =/

Can there be an extra field in the [url] tag for opening in a new tab/window?

or an extra field for "image"...alt? Anyone for accessibility?

I wonder if Reppy could, at some point, document that [ osrs] tag. It's ridiculously obscure at the moment. It just links to the OSRS, as you may have guessed, but given that most of the active mods don't know about it, I think it deserves documentation. To be known.

You sure most of the active mods don't know about it? I think it's pretty well known among staff, at least. Another helpful link is to the GHR. [.help][./help]

Hmm… tag idea:
Code: Select all
[osrs={INTTEXT}]{TEXT}[/osrs]

||
V
Code: Select all
<a href="./viewtopic.php?f=16&t=260044#{INTTEXT}">{TEXT}</a>

I hate to bump this up, but would someone with access to the Administration Options on the forums be so kind as to give me the HTML Equivalent for the [box] tag?

Gratzi.

I need some help.

First time OP. And I'm doing a reboot, with permission. So I'm trying to use all of the text from the original OOC... and everything not in boxes, spoilers, or lists is coming back with weird spacing problems I can't seem to fix. Like the whole thing went to double-spaced in between lines.

Also, another thing. At the very bottom are two lines that give credit to artists. Problem is, they say they're size 50 but the preview puts them at super tiny so you can hardly read it. Is it just the preview?

Thanks. May have more questions.

Sorry. Thread is "The Infinites". Premise is comedic, group of D-level superheroes that are the lamest heroes of them all.

The old OOC that I'm copying a lot of the first post - https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopi ... 1&t=388689

The old IC if you're interested - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=389006

The problem was happening with a saved file that I haven't posted yet, but I'm working on to get it going well before I post...

EDIT - Ok, I got the new OOC post up here. https://forum.nationstates.net/viewtopi ... 1&t=390875 - Notice how there are several paragraphs of double-spaced lines? I can't figure that out! (But I did get the other one, with the really small typesize before. It was being messed up by a "floatleft" command above it, for some reason).

Thanks. - Talc

You've got a mis-nested tag issue. Tags need to be closed in the opposite order that they're opened.

Code: Select all
i.e. [a][b][c][/c][/b][/a]

On first glance, check the coding around where you mention THE INFINITES!

You've also got a random [size] tag that doesn't seem to be closed before a [.box] code.

The box is just a blockquote tag with a certain style. That style is entirely implemented in CSS.

Don't need them. You just need to view the page source. The HTML equivalent is this:
Code: Select all
<blockquote style="background-image:none; margin-left:0">{TEXT}</blockquote>
