You can make text larger than size 300! I discovered this when working on one of my storefronts. I must have made a bb code error, I clicked preview, and everything was massive. Then, I refined it into this.
Code: Select all
[size=300][background=ooo][/size][size=300]MEGATEXT[/background][/size]
MEGATEXT

Size 300 Text

Very interesting trick, I will have to keep this in mind :)

It also works if you split it using the font color code, so you can make it even bigger.

Code: Select all
[spoiler][size=300][color=red][/size][size=300][background=white][/size][size=300]EVEN BIGGER TEXT[/background][/color][/size][/spoiler]

I wouldn't advise going with lolheug text in ordinary posts though. Garish post rules and possibly running afoul of spam rules.

Yeah, that sort of use works and doesn't break the page width or anything. :)

On each post, beside the "By [nation here]" part, there's a picture of a piece of paper with a corner folded.

What you want to do is click it, and copy the URL (The www. thingamajig string of characters), then, you've got the link.

Quicker, right-click the paper, and it should say "Copy Link Address" or something like it, and get that one. Bam, you've got the url.
Just know when it's real and when it isn't.

Two suggestions (if they don't already exist):

One, word wrapping for the [pre] tag. I'd like to use preformatted text for communiques without having to put in newlines manually. I'm sure others feel my pain. I already know that alignment works with the tag.

Two, a BBCode suppression tag. Not sure how feasible this is. And no, I don't mean the [code] tag. I want to be able to have BBCode inline without suppressing all BBCode.

If these could be implemented somehow, that would be great. Thanks :)

IIRC, the old Jolt forums had a [nocode] tag, but that was on a different platform. I used to fool other forums by embedding false codes within codes, (i.e. putting an italic open and close adjacent to each other, within another tag) but phpBB is apparently smarter than that and discards them.

I had initially thought that the [box] tags discarded code, but I now see (quite obviously) that that is not the case.

I don't know if some sort of [codebox] tag would be an option? (I, of course, also have no idea how complicated it is to add new coding things to the forum.) Although I'm not sure if that would even solve the challenge posed by YellowApple.

YellowApple, can you give us an example of what you're trying to code and use different brackets for the BBCode you want to show inline? Is this a line-by-line thing or more of a midstream, random {b}bold{/b} thing?

EDIT: Did some poking around on the phpBB forums, and - unsurprisingly - it looks like the way that BBCode is entered on the forum side of things is by saying [CODEx] --> <HTMLx>

YellowApple, do you know of an HTML code that would allow you to do what you want to do on a regular webpage? I don't have time to search around for one now, but if you have one, that might make it a more possible addition ...

Sure.

Mousebumples wrote: Is this a line-by-line thing

No, we have the code tag for that.

Mousebumples wrote: or more of a midstream, random {b}bold{/b} thing?

Exactly. I'd like to be able to post something along the lines of this:

Code: Select all
To make text [b]bold[/b], you wrap it in [nocode][b]bold[/b][/nocode] tags.

To result in this:

To make text bold, you wrap it in {b]bold{/b] tags.

I can try setting up a test phpbb server at home and hack away at it until I figure out exactly what the procedure is for how BBCode is parsed, but until then, not really. Obviously it would utilize the <span> tag, but with some other weird code that forces phpbb's parser to ignore the tags within that <span>...</span> and just post everything inside as-is. However phpbb does it.

I know it's possible; there seem to be multiple non-phpbb sites that have [nocode] tags. Perhaps we could look at the code for the [code] tag and see what fancy things it does?

This thread on the phpBB forum seems like it might be relevant. I'm tired enough that the coding details are going over my head, but hopefully that has some useful information - either for YellowApple to parse through or for an admin to say yay/nay with regards to feasibility. I'm sure that knowing they won't have to reinvent the wheel to implement such a coding change/addition, it may be more of a possibility.

It looks like all that is PHP code, which means that it's up to the admins to decide whether or not they want to play with the .php files. I'm breaking apart phpbb's source code to see if I can figure out what makes the [code] tag tick.

Late to the party, but do you mean like this?

To make text bold, you wrap it in [b]bold[/b] tags
Instead of reverse engineering the PHPBB code you could just slice a ALT+0173 inside, making the code invalid.

Okay, quoting that shizzle, I can't work out what you've done. So, if no-one minds, I might fiddle for a moment.

I'm making text bold, so I wrap it like this?
Or I'm making text bold, so I wrap it like this?
Oho! Read this. Or in fact, [url=http://alt-codes.org/list/]read this[/url].

Issues would be that you cannot then copy and paste [b]this code[/b] and allow it to be used directly. (As demonstrated: [b]this code[/b]) Being as [nocode]-type brackets are almost always there for the use of those who are learning to use BBCode, and being as those folks are always inclined towards the copy-and-paste, I feel this wouldn't be the most useful fix.

Fiddling around with how the WYSIWIG-HTML converter HotEditor deals with unwanted <b> tags in the WYSIWIG editor pane. It's quite simple really: <b> becomes &lt;b&gt; Could a bbcode tag be made that converts entity names/numbers into the actual symbol - this should be a fairly simple 'empty' html tag of some description?

This would then allow the poster to use [entity]&#91;[/entity]b[entity]&#91;[/entity]. This should just produce the [b] tag in such a way that someone who then copy-and-pastes it into their own text would find that it worked.

I can't think of a way to work this into a [nocode] tag, as that would require something that could hunt out just the left and right square brackets and convert them into entities, which would require someone sitting down with the source code. I mean, it should be a common-enough parser modification, but, not knowing much about the code used, I won't comment.

Re the original attempted solutions: I did have a look at custom codes on an old forum of mine. What is needed is a html tag that will find the brackets, as I said before, and replace them, or ignore them. I'm quite sure html doesn't do this very well, although there may be some sort of strange parsing tag somewhere. I suspect not, though, so using the in-built 'custom PhP' mod will not produce a solution.

Not all of us are Windows users. I myself am predominantly a Linux user (the exception being when I'm in that gaming kind of mood, which would be the only time I'll bother with Windows), and therefore use a compose key instead of tedious ALT codes.

Additionally, people who use laptops lacking a numeric keypad (like, again, myself) cannot use ALT codes even in Windows, as Microsoft decided it would be prudent to restrict use of ALT codes to the numeric keyboard exclusively and leave the vast majority of laptop users in the dark unless they happen to have an external keyboard/keypad.

There is several ways to do it on laptops without an external keyboard. Using the Fn key is one example.
