Let's talk about the World.

I've been playing around with extending the visual changes we've seen in the UN to the World page on NS3 (No promises that anything is actually going to appear on NS though, these are just my own experiments!!). However, I have a limited amount of creative and visual talents, so I'm here to gather some thoughts from the NS hivemind.

At the moment this is what my proposed change looks like:

Image

Currently, I am in need of a nice piece of text to put as flavour text (instead of 'This is some text for the world'). This would have to be snappy, clean, and maybe a bit witty in classic NS style. Also, the banner image is very much up for discussion. I am fine with using any of the currently existing NS banner images for this, so if you have any suggestions, link the banners (or just name the banner titles the image belongs to). The green colour of the strip below is also up for debate, but I have a bunch of other pages I want to do first, and then we can discuss which colours to use for them collectively.

Here is an alternative version of what the World page could look like:

Image

Do you guys like the 'World contains x nations and regions' text more with or without the formatting? Also, notice how the search bar is present in the second option. Is this how you would prefer this? (Also, is this a better banner than in pic1?)

I was thinking about trying out something more like this maybe (hopefully, making the search bar a less 2003-looking and more naturally-used part of the world page):

Image

Thoughts??

Also, this is an excellent choice to give any other thoughts/ideas you have about what page=world should look like or contain!! I'd love to see some wireframes or points of discussion as I'm tinkering with the code.

Beautiful art as always. I can see you aced art class.

I like the formatting more, and the search bar added.

Edit: Below the world it could say 'turns out it's bigger than @Nation'. Or even a random one from a list of witty sayings.

For consistency's sake, I'd prefer the colour bar to be kept.

If you're tooling with the World page, may i add this small request:
When you are searching for a region name, all regions that contain the search string are listed in a table. That's fine! But the one region that exactly matches your search only gets a barely noticeable line above that column. (https://www.nationstates.net/page=list_entities and search for "nations" for example).
The exact match deserves a little more attention then this :)

I'll vote for the MS Paint option.

The first and last images are not visible to me and turn up an Imgur error? Is it just me?

Here is a proposed flavor text: "Welcome to the World, a living index of all the currently exists."

I think "Za Warudo" would be more fun, but DIo would kill us for that.

    The World
  • Mostly Harmless
  • May contain nuts
  • Lockdown-free since 2023
  • Population estimates may be wildly exaggerated
  • Now hotter than ever
  • Not destroyed yet, but we're working on that
  • Formerly known as Max Barry's Gaudy Gallery of Government Goof-ups and Fantastic Flag Fails

I like this, but I would put “May contain nuts” at the bottom and in some parentheses

I like a lot of those tag lines…any chance of having several of them, displayed at (pseudo)random?

Having just a list of these that the game pulls from randomly when the page loads would be fun.

Up and running on NS3. I've just used Pogaria's for now but if anyone has any fun one-liners they'd like to contribute I can start swapping out the ones that I think are a bit weaker.

Here's a few I found on the 'net, some slightly altered:

  • The World contains a liquid core, which, if exposed due to rupture, should not be touched, inhaled, or looked at.
  • If The World begins to smoke, get away immediately. Seek shelter and hide under your desk.
  • Do not taunt The World.
  • The World may stick to certain types of political activists.
  • Void where prohibited.
  • No representation or warranty, express or implied, with respect to the completeness, accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or utility of these materials or any information or opinion contained herein.
  • Actual mileage may vary.
  • All models over 13 years of age.
  • No animals were harmed during the creation of The World.
  • Any resemblance to actual people, living or dead, or events, past, present or future, is purely coincidental.
  • The World is not to be construed as an endorsement of any product or company, nor as the adoption or promulgation of any guidelines, standards or recommendations.
  • Some names have been changed to protect the guilty.
  • The World is meant for educational purposes only.
  • Some assembly required. Batteries not included.
  • Contents may settle during shipment.
  • Do not eat The World. Not a toy.
  • If condition persists, consult your physician.
  • Subject to change without notice.
  • One size fits most.
  • List was current at time of printing.
  • Keep away from fire, flame, and nuclear warheads.
  • Beware of the wolf.
  • Limited time offer. No purchase necessary.
  • Not recommended for children under 13.
  • Freshest if eaten before date on carton.
  • Subject to change without notice. Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for delivery.
  • Not responsible for direct, indirect, incidental or consequential damages resulting from any defect, error or failure to perform.
  • Slippery when wet.
  • For recreational use only.
  • This is not an offer to sell securities.
  • Use only in well-ventilated area.
  • Keep away from pets and small children.
  • Please remain seated until the web page has come to a complete stop.
  • Pregnant women, the elderly, and children should avoid prolonged exposure to The World.
  • May be too intense for some readers.
  • The World is not authorized for use as a critical component in life support devices or systems.
  • Discontinue use of The World if any of the following occurs: itching, aching, vertigo, dizziness, ringing in your ears, vomiting, giddiness, aural or visual hallucinations, tingling in extremities, loss of balance or coordination, slurred speech, temporary blindness, drowsiness, insomnia, profuse sweating, shivering, or heart palpitations.
  • The World has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory rats.
Your eyes are weary from staring at your phone. You feel sleepy.. Close your eyes. The opinions stated above are yours. You cannot imagine why you ever felt otherwise.
  • The World does not prevent normal wear and tear, misuse, accident, lightning, flood, hail storm, tornado, tsunami, volcanic eruption, avalanche, earthquake or tremor, hurricane, solar activity, meteorite strike, nearby supernova and other Acts of God, neglect, damage from improper or unauthorised use, incorrect line voltage, unauthorised use, unauthorised repair, improper installation, typographical errors, broken antenna or marred cabinet, missing or altered serial numbers, electromagnetic radiation from nuclear blasts, microwave ovens or mobile phones, sonic boom vibrations, ionising radiation, population adjustments that are not covered in this list, and incidents owing to an airplane crash, ship sinking or taking on water, motor vehicle crashing, dropping the item, falling rocks, leaky roof, broken glass, disk failure, accidental file deletions, mud slides, forest fire, riots or other civil unrest, acts of terrorism or war, whether declared or not, explosive devices or projectiles (which can include, but may not be limited to, arrows, crossbow bolts, air gun pellets, bullets, shot, cannon balls, BBs, shrapnel, lasers, napalm, torpedoes, ICBMs, or emissions of electromagnetic radiation such as radio waves, microwaves, infra-red radiation, visible light, UV, X-rays, alpha, beta and gamma rays, neutrons, neutrinos, positrons, N-rays, knives, stones, bricks, spit-wads, spears, javelins etc.).

I made this and then realized that it doesn't really expand that much on what Chingis already posted, beyond having a bit of a sample of what's on my wireframe towards the bottom...

Image

Here's the ideas that don't really fit neatly into a screen grab of a WA page that I've butchered with bits of the current World page
  • Having a featured dispatch would be really cool, and could maybe give us something similar to Wikipedia's featured article section
  • Having four 'portals' to other information just generally- Visually showing new players what sort of content is in Regions, Nations, Stats, and Dispatch-making right off the bat

The flavour text should ideally be "in character" like the rest of the text around the page, and other similar ones. The "Max Barry" line doesn't fit with that.

lol

I'm a big fan of the search bar being on the same screen (which I already have on laptop)
Can we get the search bar on same screen on mobile too? Reason being is that each extra click to a new page on mobile eats into data allowances. So fewer clicks are preferred.

Cheers!

I would prefer the banner with flags as the openness or closeness of national borders will vary among the 313,000+ nations. In roleplay, Minoa has open borders with Albania, Kosovo and Bulgaria, but not Syria and Turkey.
