My limited understanding (it's Violet and Elu who have been working on this - I'm not an admin) is that it's nation data that we might lose a little of, and potentially some telegrams too). Regional data seems fine.

Does this mean that only nation data will be restored from past backup (as opposed to how the game was at time of the crash?)

I'm not actually sure; I think [v] said they got the new hardware in, and all of this is leftover from how the host's actions in the process made the database blow up.

Oh please let this be the case. Fingers crossed. These past couple weeks were the ones in which I decided to expand my factbooks after months of dejection and losing all that progress would be devastating. All my support to the admins and everyone else involved in getting NS back.

Again, it's very unlikely that we'll have to roll everything back to the 13th, so your nation should be fine. It's still a bit too soon to say for sure how the cards are going to be impacted, though once we are back up the techies will no doubt have a full debriefing of the whole mess for everybody.

There has been no official confirmation about when we'll be back up. Obviously we'd all like it to be up sooner rather than later, but the techies also want to make sure it's not going to blow up all over again even if it means keeping things offline a bit longer.

Those blatant lies remind me of a truth of mine, actually.

The day the server blew up, I managed to see an error page displaying the "nations served" number in the top right at just over 5 million, instead of the "Over 8 million nations served" that's on the current landing page. Using archive.org, I managed to link what I saw to the site population in late January of 2017.

Was this how much nation data was initially lost before the backups were utilized? Was it the result of a random backup lying around just being used to test site functionality? Or did that error page just pull some random update's population number from circa 5 years ago?
