Questions Regarding Stats

I have 2 questions regarding stats.

First Question: How is stats going negative calculated? For example, if a stat is at 0, and it goes down by 50%, it will become a negative number, but in actual maths, that doesn't add up. So what is the actual calculation used then, if not -50%?

Second Question: What are the leading causes of death determined by? For example, how would one get 50% of deaths from acts of god? It doesn't seem to be correlated to religiousness, so I'm not sure.
