RMB posting restricted action?

Postby Flanderlion » Fri Apr 02, 2021 3:38 pm

Hi,
Asked this in GHR but they directed me here.

Is making a RMB post a restricted action? I would've thought yes, but others believed that due to it not being explicitly listed in the script rules it only needs to follow HTML rules (e.g. rate limit/userAgent etc). On one hand, allowing bots to post without human intervention could be helpful for some regional programmes and all, but personally I'm not super keen on the idea of RMB posts not needing any human interaction to post. If RMB posts are a restricted action, could it be explicitly added to the script rules/clarification here. And conversely if they are not, again clarification please.

Thanks

OSRS states permitted actions as:

Given RMB posts generate Notices for everyone in the region (presuming they're all subscribed) I'd say they affect other nations, which would make them "restricted actions".

But I agree some specific clarity on this would be nice.

I've asked admin to provide clarification on this.

I've updated the Script Rules to clarify that this is a restricted action, i.e. bots can't do it.

Why?

I can see how this might not be high on your priorities list, but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong (from a spam perspective) with creating a private API shard for this. Perhaps the nation has to have the communications role. From there, I don't see why NS should care.

Sweet sounds good - thanks for the response/update. Was my interpretation but several others were adamant it was the opposite.

The script rules apply to the HTML site, not to the API. (For instance issue answering is a restricted action on the HTML site, but there is an API nation private shard for it)

Yes, I know. I was referring more generally to why bots can’t do it. I’m sure it’s been suggested before, but I don’t know why it was knocked down.

That's a separate issue. I don't remember anyone ever requesting an API shard for posting to RMBs before. (One exists for posting Dispatches.) It wasn't knocked down, it just hasn't been discussed.

I used to be against it entirely (hence the thread), but I now think on balance if the nation has the communications role, they should be able to post on their own RMB via the API. Still against HTML site bot posting/bot posting in RMBs outside of your own/bot posts if the nation doesn't have the comms role. That said, it isn't something I strongly care if it's implemented or remains impossible.
