GIF flags are automatically being converted to PNG

I was trying to use this GIF that I made as a flag: https://i.imgur.com/cQoeyom.gif

It's just under the 250KB size limit and well under the image size limit. The issue is that when after I submit the flag, the animation disappears, and the file seems to have been converted to PNG.

I tried doing this on another browser, specifically GNOME Web, and had the same issue. I also tried uploading a much smaller and shorter GIF (one second, 21KB) to a puppet nation, had the same issue.

Is it still possible to upload GIF flags? Anything I may have missed?

Animated GIFs are possible if the filesize is under 150kB and the image fits within 321x213 pixels. So you can have a small animated GIF so long as the filesize isn't too big. In this case, the animation will only run on your nation's home page.

Doesn't explain your second file, though.

ADVICE: Redownload you gif on your computer. You'll see something towards the bottom that will probaly look like this

GIF and APNG are different formats aren't they?

After editing my GIF to make it even smaller it seems to have worked. Wish it didn't have to be this tiny though.

I've had a lot of luck manipulating GIFs at this site https://ezgif.com. Start by reducing the height or width to fit the 321x213 pixels limit. Then reducing the file size by experimenting with a limited color palette, doing a Lossy GIF, and fiddling with the transparency. Sometimes one or a combination have given me good results.

Seems that can actually manipulate APNG files, so I decided to lower the framerate a bit and switch to APNG format, and it looks much much better now.
