NOTICE: Update Duration

Greetings and Salutations,

You all have probably noticed that the update has been suffering from a rather large variance in its duration, especially the Major update. In the last week this has also started happening for the Minor update.

The problem is structural, and so we have adjusted the planned update lengths.
Major is now scheduled to take about 2.5 hours. Minor is now scheduled to take about 1.5 hours.

This change will hopefully only be temporarily. Update duration will be reduced once this can be done without causing problems.

Is there a chance that a 3rd update is temporary or permanently put in or would that be even more of a structural and unnecessary change?

That would just add a second minor update, without affecting the existing Major or Minor.

Anyways, can't say I'm thrilled about this, but variance has definitely been problematic lately. Just don't forget about it and ghost us for months on end, eh Ballo?

Major update starts at 9pm Pacific Time, midnight Eastern Time, 5am British Time
Minor update starts at 9am Pacific Time, noon Eastern Time, 5pm British Time

These start times haven't changed, but their durations have with immediate effect (for now)

Is there any way admin can tell how many nations are updating per second? With the update length change, it's harder to estimate update duration when no nations update or CTE in the last large regions in the order.

Can you not just look at the top of the last region and see the last update time? Then just divide nations by time.

On average, yes. The number of nations which update per second is the number of nations divided by the total duration of the update (2.5 or 1.5 hours).

Within the update the speed of updating nations per second fluctuates on purpose, a feature called Variance when it was introduced. This is to make it such that the update time of any particular region has some uncertainty to it.

There are also extensive logs of the update, allowing admins to analyze system behavior after the update. This includes number of nations updated per second. The value varies, and we don't publish these kind of detailed records.

Yes, I noticed that. This will be investigated further, as it is an indication something is wrong, but we don't know yet what that is.
