April Fools Minigame 2020? (It's another SecGen election!)

Max Barry, in his infinite wisdom, clarified last Monday that "This year's April Fools event will not be virus-related." Does this rule out April Fools being postponed due to the risk of asking 185,000 national leaders to come together at this time? If so, are we getting it sooner or later? Could I have screwed up massively in making the assumption in my title that we'll get a ninth consecutive minigame? In fact, do you - the humble reader - indeed have any speculation, information, or contemplation of those things that are to be about a day from now, for about a day until we all forget about it? :P

Past pin-the-tail-on-the-April-fool threads: N-Day 2017, 2018, 2019

Here, for historical reference, are the start times of the past April Fools minigames (in chronological order - as in time, not year):
  • 2017 (N-Day): 9pm on March 31st
  • 2016 (SecGen election): 10:30pm on March 31st
  • 2020 (Election II): 11:10pm on March 31st
  • 2019 (Trivia Challenge): midnight on April 1st
  • 2012 (the IPO): 1am
  • 2013 (Z-Day): 1am, I think
  • 2018 (Trading Cards): 3am
  • 2015 (C.A.N): 5am
  • 2008 (World Assembly antiprank): 5am or so
  • 2014 (ByteCoin): 1:30pm

Definitely a Providence game :P.

A Sci-Fi themed game would be fun. The new promotional site was fun to read through.

Chronological to when in the day the minigame was published

Tis' an odd way to do chronological order.

I'd also bet on some sort of sci-fi minigame. After trying the promotional minigame Tinhampton posted the link to, (so much fun by the way!) I can easily see some sort of cross between N-Day, a reskinned Z-day and the Ender's Game-type simulation in the promo. Perhaps we will have to side with either the aliens or the humans (z-day style) and then fight each other in another asymmetrical n-dayesque minigame? Or perhaps something to be played solitaire-style like the promo minigame and the trivia challenge April fool's game. One thing that's probably a safe prediction is that there will be some sort of leaderboard to climb, or at least at the end of the event. Then my final guess is that alternately it could be one-on-one or set up so that it's up to players to initiate the game, Cards Against Nationstates and Challenge style. But then, I'm basically just listing past April fool's games at this point, and Max, being more creative than I am, is probably able to break the mold and do something entirely new. So of course this is all speculation: it's hard to predict the subject of the game, let alone the exact mechanics.

That's awesome. If I was the sort of person who posts memes, this would definitely call for "shut up and take my money".

Or is that what he wants us to think? Hmmm?

I do like concept of the promo game nonetheless. Basically be its own thing like the trading card game which would also be a separate thing. However that may fall under that it may not be added what so ever considering there would be no war feature in game.

It seems possible that it would be similar to the promo. The timing can't be just a coincidence.
E: Just did the sim. Dang that was fun. Almost reminds me of Stellar Track.

At least it's not anything to do with Corona-Chan

That joke has become a dead horse

Agreed with you on the fun-ness, but that was actually Bormiar's link... I'm mildly tempted to speculate that something utterly ridiculous like International Taxing Authority II or a re-run of N-Day where your nation gets DEATed if it ends up with 100 radiation is going to happen, but then I think we might just need (or get) a bit of actual proper fun this time. All will be revealed in a few hours :P

So, it turns out it's just a rehash of the one we had four years ago. I guess they're running out of ideas. Or they're too caught up in the coronavirus panic to have time for coding a new minigame.

Originally, Max was supposed to be on his book tour during April Fools, and [v] was busy helping him with that, so we were kinda down techie power to do a whole new event. And by the time the tour got cancelled and suddenly [v] would be around to fix things that invariably end up breaking due to April Fools code antics, it was a little too late to brainstorm and code up a whole new one, plus the whole COVID thing. ^^;

We do have some promising ideas for next year though....

We love you guys either way. Def was a surprise though. Should give the SecGen true power this year by letting them reorder the proposal queue.

Make this a regular occurrence, i.e. every 4 years.

The description for the Election Headquarters forum currently reads: Your source for the latest news, rumors, vile slander and potential scandals in this historic second World Assembly General Secretary election! As I understand, the position is in fact that of World Assembly Secretary-General and should be corrected accordingly, unless there is a good reason to keep the error intact.

Future April Fools events will not be announced in advance. So the new SG can be elected for half a year, 4 years, 10 years, or even permanently. Who knows?

Big Brother says that the Election Headquarters says "World Assembly Secretary-General" now, and has always said that. Rumors that this used to be otherwise are Fake news which could be planted by Eurasia (we have always been at war with Eurasia!) or simple people misremembering things. (thanks for the report ;) )
