Support for non-rectangular flags?

Postby Altesia » Mon Dec 23, 2019 9:34 am

Hello Everyone!

I've made a flag recently that i want as my NS flag but there's one problem: It's a swallowtail design.

When you choose a design like mine as your NS flag, it automatically fills the area around the flag with an empty space.

Is there any chance of non-rectangular flags being supported for NS in the future? i would really like to see this implemented as then flags could stand out more and be more unique.

I really thought NS allowed for transparency in the flag section. Was your flag bigger than the requirement and have to be resized? I’m on my mobile or I’d play with it myself.

If it's your current flag, try this:

Be sure to right-click → save as to save the original file.
You'll still get a bit of a weird rectangular shadow on your nation page, but the empty space is transparent.

Non-rectangular flags are supported. Well... it would be more correct to say that image transparency is supported. It's just that the border is not removed, so it doesn't really look like it.

It would be nice to have actual support for it.

Really the only change that would be needed would be getting rid of the border.

Well, no. Without a border for contrast, white parts of flags would blend with white backgrounds in the lighter themes, and black parts of flags would blend with black backgrounds in darker themes. For example, I use the dark theme. If Altesia's current flag was flipped along its horizontal axis, all but the tiniest overlap of the black triangle with the overview page banner would be indiscernible. Even banners with a lot of shadow and darkness in that particular bottom corner make it hard to see as-is.

Borders would have to be programmed to fit to the shape of the opaque area of the flag in order for all non-rectangular flag designs to appear natural and distinguishable. I can't imagine the code behind something like that being simple, if at all possible.

Here’s a simple suggestion. How about any transparency in images be treated as not the flag and the border trim pass them? Any transparency on the flag will be ignored and trimmed pass by in order to make the border more shaped to the flag

That's not how HTML/CSS works.

This is actually possible nowadays.

I've made a little tweak to nation pages. Non-rectangular flags will still have a border in many other places, though.

Thanks so much [violet]! Seeing this thread made me reexamine the requirements to see why mine wasn't displaying with transparency (I was within dimensional size requirements but not file size requirements). With this new change it looks even better than it would have before!

Edit: Would it be possible to remove the outline around the flag on the forums as well? It looks really great on the nation page and if it was the same way forum-side that would be ideal.

Wow, that was so fast! I see the forum-side outlines are already gone, and my flag--well, coat of arms--looks so good there now! Thanks so much [v], it's super appreciated!

Maybe it's just that I've never paid attention to anything technical until I got involved in cards, but it seems like requests are being processed super quickly lately, and I'd just like to say that it hasn't gone unnoticed. Thanks for the hard work.

Is there something I'm doing wrong here? I used a PNG but it's not really working at the moment.

Seeing as your flag is exactly 213 pixels tall, I'm going to guess the game automatically resized it and perhaps that resize process replaces the transparent background.

Try to cut down the size of the flag so that the game doesn't need to resize it or compress it. The limits for that are on the upload page.

Hi there,

It has come to my attention that the Flag of Nepal (https://www.nationstates.net/images/flags/Nepal.png) does not have transparency: you might want to replace that image with a PNG render from the Wikimedia Commons (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... al.svg.png), which has transparency.

We’ll deal with high-DPI screens support later.
