Beta 021: Food Quality

Proposed Change: Professional food critics checked out thousands of restautants and home kitchens and called it "work", judging ingredient quality, creativity and diversity of food.

I'm honestly surprised this is a thing we can track, given that it doesn't link well to any of the existing stats. But I guess the admins found a way.

I'd assume this is at least a little bit related to the Agriculture Industry and maybe the other food-based industries like Cheese, Pizza, Beverages. Culture might even be a factor as well. But yeah, this is not a stat I expected to see anytime soon.

I am not sure that is it. I am guessing this must be based on some of the behind the scenes statistics we cannot see. I was running some sample tests I was having trouble finding a solid pattern (mind you, it is midnight and I am on a phone).

The top nation for agriculture is only a 2.64. I am middling in most of my industries and I am a 230.77

I have noticed that health may be related, so maybe something on food quality was already tracked and this just makes it public?

Either way, I like this stat and think it is cool information to have. I am not sure what feedback we can give beyond if we like knowing this information about our nations :P

I'm not sure if food quality is tied to the quality of your agricultural/food related industries or whether you have strong safety regulations that ensure high food standards.

Since [violet] is looking for weird corner cases, I am wondering if this one I found is one of them. The Ascendant Hive ranks really high in a lot of census categories that could be related (all of the food industries and agriculture) and yet has the lowest score for this census I have seen. Perhaps some over stat is overriding these ones to create such a low score?

Agreed. Obesity rate being high, and health being incredibly low, could drag the score down significantly.

I think there's probably a stat that measure how strict the nation is about food safety and nutritional quality. I expect that, as well as culture, feed into this.

Safety, health, and culture?

Im in the top 5% for the latter two, looks like I will roughly be in the top 5% for this as well (~160)

How do we find out what the scale for this stat is, to see where our own nations fit in overall?
The Confrederated Clans (and other Confrederated Bodys) of the Free Bears of Bears Armed
(includes The Ursine NorthLands) Demonym = Bear[s]; adjective = ‘Urrsish’.
Population = just under 20 million. Economy = only Thriving. Average Life expectancy = c.60 years. If the nation is classified as 'Anarchy' there still is a [strictly limited] national government... and those aren't "biker gangs", they're traditional cross-Clan 'Warrior Societies', generally respected rather than feared.

I suppose one very rough way of doing it is through a sample test, to see from some random nations where your value fits in.

https://www.nationstates.net/page=beta?sample_test=21

From that it seems that my own value, 303.75, will be on the medium to high side. Yours is 424.68, so likely in the top 1% at a guess.

The creation of this stat is a bit cheeky, as we don't really have the exact numbers we need for a measurement. Rather it's a funky composite stat driven by the things that I thought might push food quality. It's a little mad in some of its outcomes, but there is some method to that madness.

What I'll give you guys for free is that food quality is going to gain from a strong prioritisation of the finer things in life, and being open to diversity.

Ah, so my friendliness to immigrants and foreigners in general, as well as my high culture rank, might play into a high food quality?
(You don't have to reply to that - I'm thankful for any hint I get for free. ^^)
Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

Thank you for checking.
That sounds appropriate, bearing in mind the nation's priorities.

I'm happy with that. Roll on. :) I have a stat of 370.51...which seems on the high end. Again, I'm ok with that. :)

I'm so glad that I went with a wholly made up unit for this stat. Stats which use RL units are bloody hard to calibrate, as it turns out.

Ohhh, that sort of food quality :) Here I was assuming it was about safety regulations and health inspections. I really like this idea!

The made up tongue-in-cheek units are part of what makes the stats fun. :)

That's why we have the descriptions.

And yeah, aware that the current version spells "restaurants" wrong. Typical CWA sloppiness, that's why I need a big team around me.

I was also a little distracted by the use of the term Food Quality to describe something subjective like a bunch of pretentious assholes' unqualified hipsters' asshole Yelpers' professional critics' opinion on the subject, though I do very much enjoy the description. I would probably suggest an alteration to the name of the stat, either to scare-quote it as Food "Quality" or re-naming it something like Haute Cuisine to emphasize what is really being measured.
