WA proposal time frame

I submitted my proposal, "Food Welfare Act", yesterday. When I submitted it, it said that voting would end in 3 days. Today, it says that voting will end in 1 day. I'm pretty sure 48 hours has not passed, yet. Is there something I'm not understanding, here?

Avoid answering issues or lodging messages, it is still on your nat'l happenings page saying you entered it one day ago...

I don't know how the 1 day thing works, ever since they started saying "soon" they havn't made much sense to me...

I'm hoping this gets addressed pretty soon. Getting a proposal to reach quorum is hard enough, without mysteriously losing 24 hours of voting time. I was already dreading the telegram campaign, so I don't really want to have to do it all over again, for no real reason.

At the upper bounds:

3 days is 96-72 hours, 2 days is 71-48 hours, 1 day is 47-24 hours, then it counts down from 24 hours to 1 hour, then the minutes, then "soon" which means that it is due to fail quorum unless some miracle happens.

Well, that doesn't make sense at all. 47 hours is way more than 1 day.

I also noticed that all of the proposals fail to reach quorum at the end of the appropriate server update, even if they allegedly have a few hours to go.

Just my observation, but I am starting to realise that the countdown algorithm may be written incorrectly. It should actually count down to the next major update, and not to the 3rd-day anniversary of when the proposal was submitted.

When did these changes occur, anyways, and why? I remember when I submitted "Repeal 'Access to Science in Schools'", that it gave the date when voting would end, not provide some kind of countdown.

Yeah, I messed with the "Time until voting" text, and got it wrong, and then Pythagosaurus fixed it. I hope. Anyway, the time a proposal stays at vote hasn't altered: it's just the text. And the reason it switched to a countdown is that "Sat Jun 27" is not very informative. It can mean that a proposal has 1 second left for voting or 48 hours, depending on where in the world you are, where the server is, and what time on Jun 27th it means.

Nope:

2 days ago: SchutteGod submitted a proposal to the World Assembly Commendation Council entitled "Commend Cobdenia".

That proposal is now gone. We used to get 3 1/2 days max in the queue before proposals were deleted; now they seem to be expiring after two.

EDIT: which is just as well, I guess; makes it harder for bad proposals to hit quorum.

It makes it just as hard for good proposals to reach quorum, too. >:( Seriously, I already have a curse of being 8-10 approvals short of reaching quorum, with 3.5 days.

A little suggestion: how about counting the deadlines in days, hours, minutes and seconds?

Just a thought.

A live countdown? I'm not sure that a good idea, simply because the javascript required would slow down the proposal pages... and those pages are already incredibly slow for me. :( It's weird, really: all the other pages load very fast, but the World Assembly pages creep along slowly.

He moved some url rewriting rules from directory-specific files to a global configuration file. In theory, this should make us handle requests faster; it just had some unexpected consequences.

Let me track back to yesterday's problems: is the modifications of the URLs to do with the aim of speeding up the loading of the WA pages? If so, I don't think Java may be a problem now although it should be linked to the server's clock, not the system time on the player's computer.

If it was, it's failed miserably. I still have a 2-3 second lag between when I scroll my mouse-wheel, and when the page actually scrolls, and a noticeable lag when I click any buttons.

The same subroutine is used all over the game to display relative dates (e.g. regional happenings, regional messageboard, nation activity, etc.), so it would be a bit absurd to list everything to the second. However, I agree that days are too coarse of a measurement for this, so I've changed the subroutine to include hours for times less than four days.

The lag when scrolling is an issue with your computer, not nationstates.net

What would cause my computer/browser to slow, only on World Assembly pages? This is something I've been trying to figure out for over a year.

EDIT: Actually, playing around with Greasemonkey, I disabled with background image. The page now loads just fine. :ugeek:

That one didn't expire, I killed it. It didn't say "commends Cobdenia". It said something like "may eventually get around to commending Cobdenia". It wasn't binding the WA to do anything. Despite the "we ain't got no rules" argument, a proposal's got to at least do what its category requires. So now, by precedent, you've got one rule.

That's a good move, Pythagosaurus. Thanks!

It might just be me, but I don't think it's vitally important to know exactly how many days and hours someone posted "o rly?" on the RMB.

Does it hurt you to know? I like it. Go mods.

It is incredibly useful to have that level of details, when it comes to proposal voting time. Because all of the date displays use the same subroutine, if you want to change proposal voting time display, you have to change all time displays. I don't see any problem with having a bit more detail in RMBs.

The time for the At Vote resolution still lists the date it will end (Jun 29). Was this supposed to be changed as well, or does that run on a different subprogram?

This is lovely, amazing, and in all other ways excellent (especially for tracking regional update times). Thank you! ^_^
