Are swastiskas allowed?

Postby Weida China » Thu Jun 27, 2019 5:57 pm

Can swastiskas be used if they are used in the religious (Buddhist/Hinduist) meaning?

In my experience, offensive imagery is decided on a case by case basis. But a good rule to follow is: If you have to ask to know if it’s okay, don’t do it.

Swastikas aren’t specifically banned, but using them with the intent to shock or offend usually falls under another rule (i.e. Baiting, Bad Faith)

Edit: Link to Violet’s post about malicious content, it addresses this stuff and how they decide if it’s malicious. viewtopic.php?p=12321756#p12321756

From what I know the Buddist/Hinduist context is allowed, but let the mods overrule me if they so desire.

But the Imperial Japanese flag is much more offensive, and look at all the Japanese clones around.

That’s an opinion, and one that I don’t think is very popular. Using it on a flag is not banned, but the mods have previously stated that using things like swastikas or even the Imperial Japanese flag as endorsements of offensive regimes or ideologies isn’t allowed.

Go to NSG if you want to debate. OP, as was already said in this thread, as long as you don't use them to subvert the rules or used in an inflammatory context, it's fine.

First of all, this thread should be in moderation (but I've already posted a request for it to be moved there in the relevant megathread)

The issue with judging flags based merely upon people finding them offensive is you could easily find justifiable reasons to find every flag of every nation offensive, which is why the moderators will look at other content such as the motto, pretitle, etc. to determine if a player is being malicious or not.

Imperial Japanese flag by itself = Perfectly fine (even though people from East and Southeast Asia will generally rightfully find it offensive, most people outside those regions just think of it as the old Japanese war flag)

Imperial Japanese flag + a motto that says 'lol rape of nanjing never happened get over it nurds' = Likely to get dinged by the mods.

I was actually wondering the same thing as I am in the process of creating a flag for this IC nation I just made. If I remember, religious swastikas in flags are okay but I'm not fully sure

I believe the mods have been rather clear about this: the swastika is not allowed in any context on your nation's flag. This includes with a strike through it, or images like this. In the forums it's okay so long as it isn't used explicitly for hate speech (i.e. it's fine in roleplay so long as it isn't baiting, fine in gameplay and general or for historical purposes). Now, I'm not entirely sure about factbooks, I would seek clarification on that.

The second post answered this question, so I'm not sure why the conversation kept going.

[violet] wrote:As per the FAQ, we don't permit content that is obscene, illegal, threatening, malicious, defamatory, or spam. The "malicious" category includes material that a reasonable person would believe endorses or celebrates violence against real-life people.

It's fairly clear how this applies to forum posts, but can be ambiguous when it comes to nation pages--in particular, nations that refer to the real world. An example is the use of a swastika as a national flag. The swastika isn't specifically banned on NationStates, because we don't ban particular references or arrangements of pixels. But since it is widely seen to symbolize specific real-life events--in particular, the Holocaust--it is usually unacceptable, as an endorsement of violence against real-life people. (This is regardless of how it's intended: We don't try to peer into minds to judge intent, only how it appears.)

This is wrong. Please don't answer questions unless you know this question.
