Yeah, but they also usually have things with time delays and so on. :p Though, yeah, I agree, it's probably going to be something to do with a craze.... But which craze is the question. :p

For those of us Out of the Loop, what was this "loot box controversy" of which you speak?

Even Belgian NS users weren't allowed to participate in last year's April Fools event. That's what I call authentic.

I still think the best April fools would be no event at all. Really, who would see it coming?

Loot boxes are paid DLC that unlock items or skins through chance: it is like a lottery scratchcard. In late-2017, many players and consumer authorities criticised Star Wars Battlefront II (a full-priced game by none other than EA) for originally locking higher level characters behind such a loot box system in a full-priced game.

In spring of 2018, the suspicion that loot boxes were very similar to lotteries attracted global attention, and the Belgian and Dutch authorities were notably the first countries to take on the loot box systems.

The EA’s FIFA games tried to resist the ban until January 2019, when they realised that Belgian authorities were not kidding about taking them to court for running an illegal lottery, which carries a jail term of five years in prison.

I see, very interesting. Good job, Low Countries.

As someone whose video gaming knowledge froze in time during the era of the N64, I thank you for this explanation.

It is really just lottery scratch card, just repackaged to attract those under the legal age of gambling and get them into a vicious cycle of gambling. If it continues, people will likely stop buying video games and the video game industry would then be doomed for the first time since 1983, but that’s for the other thread.

In the meantime, this is about the theme for the April Fools’ Day mini-game, which I think involves a smartphone game, whose format and genre was so popular that there are many alternatives. One of the alternatives is made by a famous company (clue 2).

Hoo-boy...the only smartphone game I really know is Clash of Clans, and that's basically ancient history at this point.

"developed by the same people behind a video hosting service" ... "One of the alternatives is made by a famous company"

Did youtube develop smartphone games? Vimeo? I should probably just stop guessing, at this point.

Of course, even I know of that phenomenon...well done

Although, is that a mobile game? I always assumed that it was a pc game. How would one play a shooter game on a phone?

Also, does a video streaming service run it?

My new guess is Minecraft.

I had HQ Trivia and Confetti in mind. I think that is what the theme is based on.

Ok so this was a lot of fun. Frustrating at times for sure (lookin’ at you, Jakker), but it was super cool that you kept adding questions at the end. Well done.
