New Forum

Postby Valipac » Sat May 09, 2009 1:19 am

Seeing the number of Embassy Exchange threads plaguing the new International Incidents forum, I would request a new forum for Embassy Exchanges and Consulate Exchanges and the like similar to the Global Trade forum. It could be it's own forum like the Global Trade one, or it could be a subforum of II. It would make it easier to find actual RP threads (no longer would they be buried under countless exchanges, much like the storefront clutter has been removed) and if you really needed an Embassy Exchange thread, you would know where it was.

Thoughts?

The addition of an embassies subforum is presently under debate with the rest of the mods in the s00per sekrit mod lair ;) I'm personally in favor, but there's some other stuff that comes up such as overly diluting the forums into too many subsections!

Just 'cause I'm forum admin doesn't mean I'm gonna just up and change something as major as forum arrangement/subforums without getting feedback from folks!

Another thought under consideration is bumping the General discussion section so that it's above the Nuts & Bolts section. The reasoning for this idea being that the discussion section is going to be higher-traffic than the moderation/technical tidbits.

I wouldn't worry about that one. There's no shortage of threads. On the contrary, a problem with NS roleplaying is that the threads sink down too fast. Unlike in General, they don't become obsolete in a matter of days, and many not even in weeks.
Spreading the threads thinner is exactly what NS roleplaying could use. It would reduce the need for the annoying thread bumping, make more threads quickly accessible, and make it easier to find the right one. Multiple subdirectories are definitely better than one big lump.

BTW, if creating that forum, perhaps it could be named Diplomacy (keeping embassies and alliances there), and the section renamed to something like Roleplaying?

It's actually easier to find a section close to either end than somewhere in the middle, even if it's up the list, so I think the current structure makes sense. On the other hand, people who use General aren't going to have a problem finding it.

Very true.

Of course, currently quite a LOT of those threads are things like
Your nation's location!
and
Your national anthem
with no IC content, and perhaps the question of whether those actually belong there -- rather than in 'Gameplay', perhaps, or maybe even in a new 'National Information (OOC)' sub-forum -- should also be raised?

Not in Gameplay, s'il vous plait... that's extra info about a nation, not included in or affecting game code in any way. It may not be IC, but it's certainly forming the background for RP posts.

I'm all for a National Information/Embassies sub-forum... I could see a lot of new or non-RPers using it as a less-intimidating way to get started. (There are the wikis for national info, of course, but that's a more isolating medium that doesn't allow other people to pop in and comment.)

Factbooks sounds good. I don't agree with news threads though, as those are in fact RP and other people are usually allowed to post news stories pertaining to that nation in there if they wish.

I've been noticing a HUGE influx of largely ooc topics in NS that granted, are all about the nations and certain aspects of them. Part of me enjoys seeing what people have come up with in a glance, and part of me is concerned that the RP is getting pushed out of the way, at the same time, having people leap up and scream 'THIS BELONGS IN II' when in fact ... it belongs in whichever forum people choose to play it out in.

II is not the only RP forum. NS is not the only RP forum. You can stage a war in either. You can write and RP in either or both. NS should not be a dumping ground for all the questions about how to play, nor all the ooc discussion about how we came up with names, concepts, and everything else just as II shouldn't be the only place to RP things.

I'm not sure if a new forum would dilute things too much, as Reppy has said earlier, or if it would actually clean things up more. I'd just hope that more people who are RP'ing would educate themselves a bit more and realize there are currently two groups who have gradually separated themselves for one reason or other over the years who are now being thrown back together as new people discover the forums, or players take the newness as an opportunity to start things over, get a fresh view, or try new things. Don't limit yourself as a role-player by getting into the mindset that RP can 'only' be this, that, the other - or in only one forum.

YAYYY! *large loud sloppy kiss for Nathi'* Yes, please don't limit yourself, all RP forums are open to all RPers.

I haven't a clue about military stuff, but I've had fun on II playing little guys who get caught up in a war and haven't a clue what's going on around them. That's -- shock, horror! -- character RP in II! There are also II players whose military has actual people in, with family or ingrown toenails or subordinates/superiors who aren't measuring up. They can even turn up seamlessly in NS's "quest", "marooned" and "discovery" RPs -- which can also transfer just as seamlessly to II. It's silly to limit ourselves.

The only caveat I have about RPing merrily on all forums is that things get pretty heated between ambassadors in the WA, where IC and OOC posts mingle. If players aren't fully aware of the IC/OOC difference, they should lurk awhile to learn it, or they'll end up flaming the player.

Why Ard ... I didn't know you cared.

Seriously though - a HUGE thank you to Rep and Crew for the new forum, and to Ardchoille - much agreement. There is so much potential across the various forums and aspects of the game, that it's a shame when players choose to compartmentalize too much and miss out.

And yes, please - keep ic/ooc straight, and if you aren't sure - ask! No need for feathers to get ruffled over misunderstandings.
