Adding Regions That Don't Exist to The Dossier?

Postby Kawaii Schoolgirl » Fri Nov 02, 2018 6:53 pm

Is there any way to dossier regions that don't exist in the same way that you can dossier nations that don't currently exist? I know you can do it with nations that have CTE'd and I think it is possible to do it with nations that have yet to be created through the Advanced Dossier, but I cannot find any way to do this with regions.

Note: There's not too much of a point to it other than maybe watching to see who refounds certain regions that Ceased to Exist, I guess. I'm just curious to see if there is a way since the Advanced Dossier is limited only to nation lists.

Unfortunately I don't believe one can dossier a nonexistent region. However, I believe one of the NS Chrome extensions allows this.

Ah! Interesting. If anyone happens to know what extension this might be, feel free to post here or otherwise send me a Telegram. I'll try to look myself of course. If I happen to come across it, I'll be sure to edit this thread to [solved] and include a link in the OP.

I mean, you could just refound the regions in question a few minutes before update, then let them CTE after removing the nations when you add them to dossier. It isn't a simple method, but it would probably do good enough.

Mm, this is true.

What I'm interested in, is essentially extending the Advanced Dossier to allow players to download/upload lists of regions, just as is possible with nations. This would require that regions that don't exist (or had CTE'd) to have some way of showing up in the dossier if such entries exist in the list that was uploaded.

But does anyone need the feature? I don't have an issue with the idea itself, but even you said "There's not too much of a point to it other than maybe watching to see who refounds certain regions that Ceased to Exist, I guess." - which doesn't exactly lend itself to having a lot of people who would use the feature. There are enough workarounds for this limited usecase.

Besides, if I have a region, and I let it CTE to see who takes it, I can either bookmark it or dossier it at the time I let it CTE. And if it wasn't mine, generally most people refound it if they care enough about it.
As always, I'm representing myself.

This is just kind of something I am personally interested in for archiving purposes. I like to try to keep all of my NS-related stuff on Nationstates when it is possible; I'm an advocate for keeping Nationstates on the site itself, as opposed to dividing activity between offsite forums and discord servers.

To answer the question, I'm interested in looking for an answer simply for the purpose of creating an on-site archive easy for me to access. It might be important to note that I have like five discord servers that act as notebooks, it gets pretty messy. I recently figured that most of what I want to achieve in my archive can be done on-site though, through the use of the dossier, dispatches, and telegrams to myself with Post Master General (since that allows for folders and almost unlimited telegram space.)

Anyway, I imagine it might be possible to write a script that takes any region and accepts it and adds the region name, regardless of whether it's ever existed or not. I'm not sure how to go about figuring out how to write that though.

I don't think it's possible to add a dead region to your dossier. Regions and nations can be added by links like these:

https://www.nationstates.net/page=dossi ... =the_sands

https://www.nationstates.net/page=dossi ... nds_casino

https://www.nationstates.net/page=dossi ... gas_casino

But you can't add a dead region:

https://www.nationstates.net/page=dossi ... oker_table

Nations still exist in the database after they CTE, which will be why we can still add them. Regions seem to be removed completely, so there is nothing left to add to your dossier.

I don't know if regions stay in your dossier after they CTE. Maybe you could try Lord Dominator's suggestion and see if it works.

With the API, you could use the “regions” shard, or the “regionsbytag” shard to compare new regions to a list of dead region that you were watching out for.

Technically it's not a database. But yes, nation information survives CTE. Region information does not.

Ah, yes this makes sense.

And yes, when a region dies, it stays in your dossier, but it's just the name of the region.
