We had hardware issues in the last maintenance cycle overnight. Admins will need to look into them

With that, I'm a tad curious: How did the nations ended up with weird stats (1 million pop, "0" as currency and animal) and ended up in some literal ghost region?

Where is a good place to find out about scheduled maintenance? Was it a stickied post somewhere? Is there a special place to look for such announcements?

We've had a few different things go wrong. What went wrong a couple of hours ago was that gameside ran out of disk space. This meant that newly created nations wouldn't actually get saved to disk, but would have a phantom existence.

I took the site offline to prevent more such problems, removed some unneeded files, and am compressing an enormous amount of logs.

There are possible to be intermittent problems connected with squirrel that I can't explain because I don't understand them, which would lead to brief downtime whenever they come up. (See here).

Neither problem was or is predictable. I'll make sure we announce when we think things are solid. (To be clear, I don't expect us to run out of disk space any time soon).

There was an indicator on the top right where it would show you the time until maintenance. I think it went as early as 30 mins, I just managed to screenshot it at the literal last minute.

That's a shame. It would have been amusing for them to have remained here, under the control of an Admin or something. Just for posterity of course.

But glad that the problems are mostly fixed. I was worried that the NationStates Server had finally gained sentience, emerging from the primordial soup of all the forum posts, and subsequently rebelling against the site Admins...

I will admit, i created the nation because when i tried to log into my account it said 'This nation doesnt exist', so i made SS the Second and it didnt work.
Then i saw space inc, so i checked if mine was corrupted as well.
And, lo and behold, there it was.

Honestly I was just confused as to why my og nation was 'Non-Existent'.

That's NationStates on Android's Chrome, so yeah, technically it's the mobile version.

Also in a region called 'ghost' which does not exist.

And a good time to remind each other to back up your Factbook codes or whatever on Word and save it. Save it on your laptop, on your computer, on the disc, on the USB flash drive...

Given the unpredictable nature as aforementioned, and even though it has not happened yet based on my experience, it's good to have copies of your work on your own computer.

And of course, many thanks to the admins for keeping this up! Those 6 hours must have been pretty crazy!

It looks like the data was simply missing, and so everything defaulted to zero. Population? Zero. Founding date? Zero. National animal? Zero. Currency? Zero.

Not sure where the 1 million population came from, since that isn't zero. Maybe there was an update tick since then?

That's weird. They're all in Lazarus. All the others were in a non-existent region called _ghost_. Mods could delete them, but the names would remain unusable. It takes an admin to do a complete wipe.

Not sure where the 1 million population came from, since that isn't zero. Maybe there was an update tick since then?

They weren't in regions, so they wouldn't have been updated.

Almost all the hidden data was also gone, as in 'never created'. In a bizarre twist, they did receive notification of all the banners they were eligible to display.
