Recent Lag, Database Errors, & Slow Daily Updates

Hi all,

By way of FYI, we've had a lot of trouble recently with the network connection between two of our servers. Twice in the last week, the connection failed completely, leading to visible "Database connection errors." In both of those cases, I wasn't around, but Eluvatar managed to rig up a temporary solution to enable the servers to communicate at reduced speed so the site could function until the regular connection was restored.

Today, after the second failure, our host made some hardware changes that we hope will resolve the problem more permanently.

Eluvatar flew that one solo, and I want to make special mention of that, because it was a site-critical situation with failed hardware, and if he hadn't handled it, we would have had no site for at least six hours.

I hope things get back to normal now, and thanks for your patience.

Eluvatar deserves a lot of respect for handling such a situation alone and while Eluvatar is technically new in the post the event showed that there aren't that many standard procedures in place. As the administrative team grows, I would recommend that some 'guidance' be set up not just for existing staff but for new staff who might need to be trained up to fulfil the role. That would also give you guys chance to analyse the decisions you are making and that can only be good for Nationstates.
