Y'know, that Reddit April Fools event of 2017 that became a hybrid of art and a war between factions. Now I was thinking, what if WE here at NationStates did that too? Not as a social experiment, but rather as a fun activity for us all to enjoy.
The mechanics would be similar to r/Place, with a 1000x1000 Pixel Canvas to draw on. A user would only be able to place a single pixel once every ten minutes (maybe shorten the interval since NS doesn't have as many users as Reddit). In order to prevent circumvention via puppets, you'd need to press a button on the event's page in order to leave and a system similar to the WA Multi detector would need to be put in place. (Maybe also make it so once you join the event you cant leave it).
Now here's where things get different, there would also be factions like in the Nuclear Apocalypse Event but they would merely be for organisation (and factions could possibly have a live chat system for coordination).
The event would last for a couple of days, when it is completed it could be put somewhere on the website for all users to admire. Maybe it could be a yearly event.

I don't this is like any other event. And I have questions. Would there be teams? Would a 5 min interval be sufficient? How many canvases would there be? Is the goal to have the most of one color on the page? Wouldn't this be a bit tedious and boring?

I'll answer your questions in an order that seems appropriate.
How many canvases would there be?: Only one.
Is the goal to have the most of one color on the page?: No, there is no specific goal only artistic expression.
Would there be teams?: There would be factions like the nuclear event, but only so people can co-ordinate projects with one another.
Would a 5 min interval be sufficient?: I believe it would.
Wouldn't this be a bit tedious and boring?: The event would be optional to join, so if you find it to be tedious and boring then you simply don't join it.

I find it may change the game from politics to art temporarily. The Zombie and Nuclear apocalypses were fine because they were based on defending/ attacking with your nation. This sounds like something a region would do on a forum.

It's not really meant to be nation related, but it can be if you wanna start a flag war with another user where one person tries to make their flag while another tries to make their flag on top of yours.

United German Regions is supplying medical aid to numerous nations recovering from war | UGR investigators discovered the presence of slavery in Cresenthia to manufacture teddy bears | The leader of UGR has just eaten a samich

That basically rules it out, NationStates is not made to be an artistic platform, this is a political simulation that revolves around you being your nation, everything they do is related to it and if you need a break other games exist.Gurori wrote:
Although there is it's own set of problems, Mods would need to monitor it for any rule-breaking content (like swastikas, porn, etc).
Another major problem, the moderators are volunteers and I wouldn't bet that 24/7 surveillance on a massive canvas would be a reasonable job. Even if mods could in theory monitor it what happens when they miss something for just a few minutes, chaos and backlash would likely occur.

Self enforcement usually works pretty well in events like this. If someone tries drawing a swastika all the people who don't want a swastika drawn can gang up on them and draw over it, and there are more people don't like swastikas then like them.

Exactly, I think self moderation of such a canvas would work quite well. Someone tries to draw a swastika? Users can patch it up. Someone tries to draw a phallus? Users can patch it up. Someone tries to draw anything rulebreaking in general? You guessed it, users can patch it up. I think it'd be enough to hold off such people until a mod can deal with it accordingly.
