For my flag I have use a bay leaf image from wikipedia that is published udner the GNU Free Documentation License, the original (with licencing terms) can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bay_leaf_pair443.jpg

The specific lincence is "Creative Commons sharealike", http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/.

I find no reasonable place to attach this information except here, so I wonder:
Would it be possible to get the ability to attach this kind of information with your image?

The use is definitely allowed and in fact encouraged by the Free Cultural Works community.

I just wish I had an easier way to link to the original image.

IMHO I don't think you could use that image as an NS flag while meeting the conditions of the license, since the game will display it in a bunch of places without attribution.

If it was possible to do the attribution on Bayleaves status page, we would be home free because that is how it works on Wikipedia. Then there would be a link to information about the image everywhere the image is used.

I am also trying to get in touch with the photographer to get his opinion on the matters.

Meanwhile I am claiming that I do my best to comply to the letter of the license while in whole complying to the spirit of the license.

edit(2):
I have changed from a png file to a gif file, the gif file is correctly tagged with the appropriate copyright information.
