An issue I was not meant to get?

Postby Lamebrainia » Wed Mar 08, 2017 3:58 am

Good day, everyone.

Not sure if this is the place to report, but I couldn't find a centralised thread for dumping this kind of things.
Yesterday I got issue #435 which seemed very... socialist to me, so I took another look at my nation's category - and it was Capitalist Paradise, same as before.
I have no idea of the internal variables used, and I had similar issues with my nation in the past because of the choices I make, but something tells me capitalist nations are not supposed to get issue #435.
Please let me know if I can somehow elucidate this more or if this report belongs elsewhere. Or simply tell me I'm wrong.
Cheers.

P.S. Occasionally the timer showing the time until the next issue pops up on the issues page, and I don't quite understand when and why this happens. This seems to be tied with the recent change from plaintext url's to imagelinks. I'm running the latest version of Firefox on a Windows system, and I've already cleaned out cache and cookies, I am fairly certain it's an issue with the site.

I think that the "fix old issues" megathread in Got Issues would be a good place to go. Could you elaborate on your other problem, though?

Romans 1:18-2:29, Ephesians 2:1-10
But God’s angry displeasure erupts as acts of human mistrust and wrongdoing and lying accumulate, as people try to put a shroud over truth. But the basic reality of God is plain enough. Open your eyes and there it is! | Those people are on a dark spiral downward. But if you think that leaves you on the high ground where you can point your finger at others, think again. Every time you criticize someone, you condemn yourself. | It’s a wonder God didn’t lose His temper and do away with the whole lot of us. Instead, immense in mercy and with an incredible love, He embraced us. He took our sin-dead lives and made us alive in Christ. He did all this on His own, with no help from us!

You're correct, but I'm not sure what problem OP claims to be having with it, hence why I asked them to elaborate.

According to your nation page, you have outlawed private enterprise.

Having a high Economic Freedom (and thus qualifying for Capitalist Paradise) without private enterprise is difficult, but it is possible. It simply means that your nation is weird. All economic activity is controlled by the government, but the government is very committed to doing whatever it takes to keep the economy strong.

Note that your Economic Freedom, while displaying as -26.33, is really 73.67 internally, with a -100 modifier for banning private enterprise.

What Trotterdam says. Weeeeird nation.

You're correct that the issue is coded to appear only for nations that have gotten rid of capitalism.

You're also correct in that the freedoms you grant categorise you as a Capitalist Paradise.

So there you have it: you're a nation that identifies itself as communist and has outlawed capitalism, that happens to be a corporation-friendly paradise for capitalists. Sounds like real life China to me!

I have been previously told in this very thread that questions about getting an issue/option you think you shouldn't get are to be directed elsewhere, but, unfortunately, I have not retained the link.

But of course, I apologise if I wasn't particularly clear. Basically, the issues page would normally host links to issues I have not dealt with or a blinking timer until next issue if I didn't have any issues to be concerned with. Recently I have started getting the timer with an unresponded-to issue still present on that page. Refreshing the page would remove it from view. The timer would only pop up with a single issue present - a list of two or more issues never produced that error for me.

Thank you, kind sir. That answers my question, I am very grateful. How do you know all this? I've been playing for years and I had no idea.

Sometimes I scare myself too :-D At one stage, my nation's category was "Anarchy", but according to its description the country was run by a conglomerate of merchants, while the other bit claimed biker gangs roamed the streets and no government existed.
But I understand that it's impossible to account for every weird freak out there, and I don't think the game's to blame.

Thank you all so much for helping me out.

The Anarchy description of biker gangs is definitely an odd one, as it's based purely on your nation category, which in turn is based purely on your civil rights, political and economic freedoms. That means you can still get that category if you have massive police spending, no crime, a well enforced ban on all automobiles and a happy and law abiding population.

In fact, as the simulation has MOST nations as being entirely crime free (something I've often said needs fixing) and as most nations tend towards freedom, there's actually a lot of law-abiding Anarchies out there.

That's quite peculiar and something I did not know either... Is there any way for us mortals to get more of an idea of how those things work? A wiki or a statistical table, perhaps? Or are those things something I'd notice myself were I paying more attention to how my nation's descriptions and statistics change based on what I do?

You can work out a lot based on watching closely what happens to your nation, especially if you have multiple nations and you can compare the results of different choices.

But what if they're law-abiding bicycle gangs?

I don't have a problem with any of that - in fact, I am a big fan of that paragraph myself, and I've missed it a lot since a ton of new issues was added that has been preventing me from achieving Anarchy like before (not that it was an easy task in the past). Where I fail to strike a logical correlation is between "there is no government in the common sense of the word" (citation from memory) and any mention of said government in the next paragraphs ("the country is ruled by business-minded individuals" - again, a citation from memory).

Thank you. I am glad to hear someone's had that same issue, and I am not imagining things like usually.

Well, what are uncommon senses of the word?

That line is not part of the Anarchy description, though. Rather, it's the start of the second paragraph for nations with very small governments, which continues "There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded individuals [...]". It should be mutually exclusive with anything that sounds like what you claim to have seen later, though it's capable of contradicting category descriptions (Farther Knows Best State, Capitalist Paradise, and Corporate Bordello all include the words "ruled by", the latter being only a few civil rights away from Anarchy, and other categories mention "government"), and probably some issue effect lines.

It also appears for nations with a Government Size of 0. Probably because if there was literally no government, then there would be no government leader- no you (the player).

That means I am mixing things up. I apologise.

Here is a screenshot for the timer issue I've mentioned beforehand:

And a new issue I've come across today:

Issue timer issue

Postby Lamebrainia » Thu Mar 23, 2017 12:24 am

I have managed to reproduce it. It seems to only occur if the issue before the last issue is dismissed. Then you end up on the issues page with 1 issue and 1 timer until the next one.
