I see, I had a feeling it was some sort of technical problem because everytime I tried accessing the forums a web server error page appeared. Thanks for informing us on that little matter

Given that the error message clearly stated "Invalid SSL certificate, The origin web server does not have a valid SSL certificate", I'd wager long odds that the SSL certificate played a role in the outage.

When I last renewed the SSL certificate for nationstates.net, I forgot to copy it onto one of the servers. Then I ignored a warning email saying a certificate was about to expire because I thought it was about an old one we didn't want any more.

Well, to be picky, what you said was incorrect; the certificate you were talking about is issued by CloudFlare, and that's not the one that expired. You can't normally see the true NS certificate as it's only used to verify communication between CloudFlare and us.
