Passing laws

Postby Sandiloa » Mon Jan 23, 2017 1:16 pm

I understand that laws/bills etc are passed through decision making. Which I have no problem with in fact I like the idea!

However I feel there is a lot of limitation to what you can do. I would strongly suggest adding some sort of feature that allows each player the power to implement certain laws upon start up or through the terms.

Maybe even limit it by adding a point based system either by;

winning the hand of the government.
amount of citizens
terms (days/months) to introduce certain bills.

Not being able to cut tax to your desired level or manage budget spending/laws.

I'm very new to the game so maybe you can do this?

:)

You actually have a lot more control over how your nation starts than you used to. Some assumptions are made when you start your nation, but through time you can answer more issues to try to change things. If your nation started exactly how you wanted it would defeat much of the fun of the game, which is deciding how your nation is going to end up through time.

The point of the game is to not have to deal with this stuff. If you want a game like this, there are plenty of good ones on steam. I think I just saw one about being a town mayor? The fun of NS is that you don't have to worry about super-micromanagement. And if you want that, you can RP it. The nation I'm currently on now is almost a year old and I find the best way to enjoy the game is political regions and good RPs.
It's been over two years that Perland has been on Nation States!

The game is supposed to be a satirical commentary on how it's impossible to make easy choices, along with lessons in unexpected consequences. We're not aiming for realism.

Don't know what you mean by this. You (the player) are automatically assumed to be the leader of your government, whether despot or democracy. Since you're the one making all the choices, that can't really change.

Sandiloa wrote:amount of citizens

Every nation starts with a population of 5 million and grows at the same, slightly random, rate. If you want to roleplay something different, feel free to mention it in a dispatch or roleplay post. The base number isn't going to change - it's got a long history as being the "age" of your nation.

There is no set calendar in this game. If you want to play it as if each day is a day, or a month, or a decade, that's fine with us. Issues come at the rate you choose in Settings. How that translates to game time is up to you.

All controlled by issue choices and subject to the Rule of Unintended Consequences. The more you study issues and the longer you play, the more control you will find you have.

Thank you for your replies.

I know that issues lead to consequences which I have done. I also understand and that micro-managing is not really the aim of Nationstates. I was just wondering if we could have a little more options regarding bills/laws you expect that to be role-played.

I have no issue regarding the starting population as mentioned above. (mentioned for idea of a point system)

I think the problem is that I'm new to the idea of roleplay and I can honestly say it's not really what I'm looking for. Specially when there isn't much realism to go on.

I will try and give it ago but if not I will just go back to simulations! :)

Again thanks for you replies.

Generally where role play is concerned people simply state what their population is rather then go with their nation's actual population, particularly since they get pretty unrealistic. Take my nation for example, it has a population of 6.41 billion which is almost the population of the earth.

Part of the fun of roleplay on NationStates is that you can make up a lot of the details yourself. Check out the roleplay forums here and give it a try, might be your thing, or it might not be. Still, only one way to find out :)
