Use a computer. :P

...What "top part"? This is what I see (you'll have to click the link as it is rather wide):

Do you mean the board index, user control panel, etc parts?

Unfortunately, it's hard to fit my computer in my pocket when I want to post on the road. :P

When I'm at the Board index, everything above "Technical" is "chopped off".When I look at threads with one or two posts, the whole thing is invisible. When I look at longer threads, the first posts are gone.

Does this happen when you try to view other phpBB 3.0 forums? If it's a phpBB problem, there's not much we can do. If it's specific to NS, there might be something that can be done. Of course, it's not likely to be high on the list of priorities...

So far, the NS forum is the only one I've seen this on, but I don't recall if I've ever tried another phpBB 3.0 board. Do you know an URL I could look at?

Also, if this helps, sometimes it does seem to load the whole forum, but then it quickly chops off the top part.

You could always try: http://www.phpbb.com/community/

Thanks, Hack. The Iphone seems to load that one with no trouble.

Hm. Okay. Possibly an NS-specific problem. Will have to wait until [violet] or Pyth see this.

Not helpful? I was unaware that suggesting positive alternatives was unhelpful.

This is a technical issue that should be fixed and has not been previously reported. Suggestions to use things other than the iPhone are unnecessary, it's not as though Romanar *only* uses his iPhone. If it was a known problem with no solution, then alternatives would be useful.

Re: Iphone problem

Uhm, I agree, let's not be snarky. My iPhone runs OSX and is a computer with an internet connection, browser, and some of the same functions of a laptop, but it's a flash drive a computer that fits in your pocket. With a lousy camera. And an iPod. That happens to be a cell phone.

So this issue isn't an iPhone problem, the issue is with how the Safari browser on the device renders the page. Some thoughts...

    - If the issue has anything to do with the use of Flash - fuhgetabout it, iPhone hasn't, doesn't, and will never render Flash. It's a horse that's been beaten to death on Mac forums, buried, dug up and flogged mercilessly some more. Apple just says no to Flash.

    - My Mac and my iPhone Safari browsers are not the same and there are some things you cannot expect something that fits in your pocket to do. To protect itself, iPhone Safari blocks elements and entire pages that execute code in ways it finds suspicious. Those same pages work in other versions of Safari.

    - Some phpBB builds allow "lite" versions (Yggdrasil has one) that AFAIK play quite nice with a portable device's browser limitations. Good luck and happy iPhone surfing! ;)

To the user, iPhone now allows third party browsers and you might try one of them.

Thus far I've been unable to reproduce the problem. I don't have an iPhone, but things look fine on Safari, and small resolutions. Anyone know if there's a way to simulate the iPhone without actually having an iPhone? (Don't say iPhoney. It looks fine in that too.)

There isn't AFAIK.

Developer Tools claim to have simulators, but the iPhone is a locked down proprietary gizmo. I code web sites and preview then in Internet Exploder, Firefox, Opera, and Safari before posting them.

The Safari on my XP workstation does not render the same as the Safari on my MacBook. Neither does Opera. How they render does relate to screen resolution sometimes:
CRT = 96 dpi
iPhone = 163 dpi

But I can get a site W3C certified and one of those 4 browsers will "break" a frame, form, table, or otherwise seemingly simple HTML for no reason I can figure. Rendering engines still burp. I miss Netscape. ;)

Fact remains there are just some things iPhone REFUSES to do. Steve Jobs promised us that we could - FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER - copy and paste text on our iPhones sometime in June 2009 when the new OS update is released. I am so very proud of how innovative the company has become. :lol:

This raise an interesting question... is there some enterprising coder who could work on an iPhone NS app? Rather like Facebook or YouTube?

I use my iPhone to check things on offsite forums already, but I could always be enticed to use it to answer issues, change things around, send TGs... it's probably waaaaaay down on the list, but hey- even low on the list is still on it.

It ain't rocket science, turns out. There is specific HTML that other browsers ignore that will theoretically optimize any web site for IPhone's Safari. You just drop one line in the header of the source code.

If you check out Google's documentation on making a handicap accessible site (which work really well on cell phones and in handhelds) it just has to do with stripping out bells and whistles small browsers choke on and making the site capable of being rendered narrowly. NS uses frames and if there's a minimum size, that becomes a binding constraint. It isn't on iPhone because it has the ability to zoom, but few portable gizmo browsers can do that - and I see Apple sharing that source code - uhm, never.

If we could add to the wish list a handicap accessible NS, that would kill two birds with one stone.

I'm on iPhone 2.0 right now posting this. I cannot reproduce any rendering problem referenced here. Everything looks and behaves properly AFAIK.

You know you've made it on NSG when you have a whole thread created around what you said.

It looks like the problem is fixed, possibly when they added the Factbook forum. :) Mine is now working too!
