Wrong outcome for issue option

Postby Ratateague » Wed Aug 31, 2016 9:47 am

I recently answered the Not Another Teen Pregnancy issue (#358) and received a bunch of disappointing drops in my stats and this in my happenings: "the youth of today are literally shaped by big business." That doesn't sound like option 4 at all, which I'm 110% positive I chose, but rather option 3.

You chose option 3, the 'Children 4 U' Inc one*. You probably mis-clicked; it happens. Even I've done it before... and that was with an issue I'd written.

*Technically option 4, but listed to players as 3, as there are two versions of option 2.

Except I'm absolutely sure I didn't. I had triple checked before clicking. However, I was accessing NS through the NSDroid app and four (4) options were being displayed. Could this be the issue?

I mean, I'd rather not suffer when it wasn't a user error. If I had accessed Nationstates through a browser, and as you said only three options displayed, I would have actively avoided option 3. ... Please oh merciful mod just grant me this one reprieve while I alert the app developer

Four options should have displayed; that's correct. There's effectively options 1, 2a, 2b, 3, 4. You will only either see 2a or 2b - you can't see both. Option 3 was what you selected (whether deliberately or not) and that's what was resolved. The effects aren't going to be reversed.

I did see both, though. And option 2b was being displayed as option 4.

That's not possible.

Could they have both been displayed as a failsafe?

No. That one is dependant on a binary stat. I have similar stats concerning that issue to Ratateague, and the issue worked as intended for me. It only displayed 4 options, not all 5.

What happens if the binary stat can't be retrieved or takes too long to get (i.e times out)?

That's irrelevant, since Ratateague's second post acknowledges that four options were shown, not five. Thus, only one of 2a or 2b were shown, while 1, 3 and 4 were shown correctly. There's nothing wrong here, except for a mis-click being incorrectly extrapolated into a bug in the hope that we'll reverse an unwanted stat change.

Except that's not at all what happened. I'm thinking it's a problem with NSDroid not being able to handle certain types of issues, but thanks for mischaracterizing me on top of all that.

Anyway you can close this since it's clear nothing will come of it.

NSDroid will only be served one of options 2a and 2b. It won't see the behind the scenes validity for those options.

If you want, I will assign the issue to a puppet nation of yours, and you can check again on NSDroid to see what options are displayed, and how that compares to viewing it on a regular web browser.

If you want to double-check on your issue outcome, you should probably go to settings and check the "Require Legislation before passing issue" box. That way, you could change things back if you mis-clicked.

It looks like NSDroid is assuming that the option index is always sequential (see code snippet here). That's usually fine, but in cases where an option has different variants (as Sedgistan described), the index actually skips numbers.

For issue #358, the indices go: 1 (1), 2a (2), 2b (3), 3 (4) and 4 (5). The OP definitely chose option 4 and NSDroid submitted option index 4 to NS, but it should've submitted option index 5 instead (since the indices jump a number due to option 2's variants).

Thanks for letting me know of this bug. I'm fixing it right away and a new version will be up shortly!
Sorry about this messing up your issue, Ratateague.

EDIT: The bug has been fixed and the new version should be available any time now.
