Can I have the avialan added to the flying list, please?

National News Radio: A large-scale infrastructure project will soon be underway. During this time, for safety reasons, the island will be closed to tourists and foreign news agents. We do expect a minor loss in revenue due to this, but this will be greatly offset by both the long and short-term benefits of the infrastructure project. If your job is negatively impacted by the island closure, please send a letter or verbal message via courier to the Council so that we can add you to the list of beneficiaries of foreign aid.

That's not an animal. It's an order of animal that includes all birds and possibly some of their extinct relatives besides. Whyever would you set that as your national animal?

Why wouldn't I set it as my national animal? I'd love a simple name for "feathered flying theropods that are not birds," but there isn't one that I am aware of. Avialan has to do.

Edit: I don't think my earlier post was very constructive. It's up to [violet] whether or not she wants to implement plurals for these more obscure terms.

If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. | Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

Or as much sense as "bird," perhaps?

Also I don't see you complaining about, say, Bears Armed, whose national animal is the "goldilocks."

His nation, his rules. The great thing about NS is there is no right or wrong answer, he posted to get his animal moved to the skies, not debate the validity of his animal.

Wouldn't it make more sense to pick a particular species or genus, like Archaeopteryx (though that one's typically considered a bird), rather than an entire taxon (which you're interpreting paraphyletically)?

With both Avialae and Archaeopteryx, though, I question the validity of adding them. It would be rather impractical to enter every single scientific genus name into the game. I think we should keep this to English common names, until and unless the ability for players to freely select their animal's habitat from a menu is added.

Are we seriously telling a player they're wrong about their animal? I think y'all are being pedantic and it's not productive in the least. So let's just stop and let admin do their thing, yeah?

its quite a wide net, and yes, many in the clade cannot fly.
i think we should give it to him though, considering i doubt anybody else would have thought to write that in as their animal.

Depends, if it is a herd animal, some others might follow their lead.

If I were to act on this, I'd be inclined to consider any animal who's name starts with "avia" to be a flying animal.

What problems, if any, would this cause?

I misread your post as saying containing avia, not starting with avia. My mistake!

If you can check for a string only at the beginning of a word instead of anywhere, then I think even "avi" is enough to make it pretty likely you're talking about a bird. Just about the only word that would cause a false positive is "avid".

However, I'm also not sure how much help it would be, since most bird names, scientific and common, don't start with that. Ending on "aves" or "ornithes" is much more common.

Osprey is considered a land animal. Either sea or air would work.

I think the game thinks a mongoose is a type of waterfowl. Or else aircraft in my cities fly so low that ten inch terrestrial feliforms need dodge them.

Problem with nation page

Postby Meeresreich » Wed Jul 18, 2018 9:48 am

My nation description says my national animal, the sprat, 'frolics freely in the nations lush forests'. Can this be changed as a sprat is the common name applied to a group of forage fish belonging to the genus Sprattus in the family Clupeidae. The term also is applied to a number of other small sprat-like forage fish. Like most forage fishes, sprats are highly active, small oily fish. They travel in large schools with other fish and swim continuously throughout the day.
