Animal Relocation Thread

Postby Proticata » Sun May 15, 2016 9:17 am

If your animal is listed as being land-based when it is actually air or water-based, please report it in this thread so admin can look into relocating it to its proper location.

Kingfisher. That's your problem. You could change it to something like the Kookaburra, a species of Kingfisher, but I'm not sure if the game will know it is a bird.

I'm sure the game could be coded to override the normal "fish" rule in this instance, since the word "kingfisher" is pretty easy to recognize if you're looking for it.

Your kingfishers have been gently relocated from your oceans to your skies.

I actually suspected that one might happen someday :)

The game recognizes a number of fantasy creatures like dragons and phoenixes as flying, which is a boon for those of us that like those creatures (whether we're a fantasy nation where those creatures actually exist, or we're just okay with naming a national animal that doesn't actually exist - several real-life nations have done it), but results in silliness when it comes to real-life animals which were named after those fantasy creatures despite not resembling them that much, such as the komodo dragon.

Let's hope nobody has a pink fairy armadillo...

Accia's national animal is the Pink Fairy Armadillo, which soars majestically through the nation's famously clear skies

I presume it just has a list of birds?

Speaking of, Puffins are perfectly capable of flight - I think they need t'be added to the bird list?

Butterflies are ground creatures also, apparently. But then again, they don't exactly soar like birds... but they can't exactly frolic.

I'm confused.

Sacred Toast wrote:Sorry if I am being ignorant.... but what birds? How does NS recognise birds in the first place?

NS defaults to 'frolics in the nation's many lush forests' for it's description of your national animal, or mentions deforestation if you try to kill it off. Some buzz words, like 'bird' for example, set off some code (is that a good phrase, I don't do coding) that changes it to mention air , and likewise 'fish' mentions water. There are countless other buzz words, but they all have to be manually inputted, which is why some more specific types of animals, eg. Kingfisher, aren't recognised. The program also doesn't know the different between where something is used as a noun and something that is used as an adjective, so Pink Fairy Armadillo soars majestically through the nation's famously clear skies, because 'fairy' is mentioned.

This may or may not be partly wrong, this is my stab at it, I don't have access to the games code. Sadly.

Why do flying squirrels soar?

They can fly a tiny but, but they are land animals, comeon

A lot of animals have "flying" in their name that can technically only glide. (Oddly, animals that actually do fly, like birds and bats, rarely have it mentioned in their name - probably because they're members of huge families where almost everything can fly, so for those animals flying does not set them apart from their similar relatives.) It doesn't sound like something that can reasonably be fixed, though, since recognizing adjectives like "flying" is very useful for anyone making made-up animals, and there's not just a couple names to list as exceptions as with the kingfisher.

I guess your nation just has some really powerful thermals.

I'm sure this is just a mistake. Most likely a coding error as stated before.
