Usually I've only seen links to websites and when I open file pictures,they are sponsored by a site called www.image. *something* *something* .com.So tha means .gif type files cannot be attached to signatures?

Indeed, images will not work in signatures. You get eight lines or less of text, so long as it's not in a huge size or offensive or whatever. When I was a young nation, we didn't have signatures at all! Uphill both ways, and we licked the forums clean every day for breakfast!
