Could you post a pic of what you're seeing please?

Fundamentally I don't think we can hide links to the most popular pages behind any kind of drop-down. It's important that people be able to reach that stuff quickly.

A user-customizable drop-down menu isn't feasible, but we do support themes, including player-created & -maintained ones.

Dark theme is player created. Basically...create a thread, make a theme. CSS/Javascript then post the details in said thread and Violet will get to it eventually.

I did post a screenshot violet.

Take a look at #forumsidepanel it overhangs #panel by two to three pixels. (To the right).

I compare it with Dark and Dark has it neatly in line.

I removed a 3-pixel left margin from the panel which caused an offset visible in your earlier pic. What I think you're talking about now is the box-shadow, which slants down and to the right, and which is absent in Dark (so the panel doesn't appear to pop out). All the shadows on the site do that.

It's still overhanging. What the removal of the margin did was to get rid of the bottom left corner and therefore widened the box. It did nothing to the bit on the right which overhangs still. Basically, you extended it by three pixels to the left. I want to trim off three pixels from the right.

In other words, I'm still getting the same image as previous.

No, it's definitely the shadow. I added a straight green line to demonstrate:

You can also verify this by using your browser's dev tools to turn off the shadow.

And I still think it looks dodgy. When viewing the sidebar on the forum, it actually looks like it's chopped a pixel or two off. Either way. Would be much nice three pixels thinner. >_>

Could you perhaps make an image of what you recommend? Changes always have their own issues, eg shrinking the box like you suggest would create an oddly colored corner in the top right of ".panelcontent".

Perhaps it'd look more even if you added a shadow box (I don't know the correct terms) around the latest forum topics too.

Kringalia, lets go further. Is the panel needed at all?

No not really. Just shove in a good old horizontal rule at the bottom to split it from the Latest forum topics and if you *reallllly* want to, put the shadow around the whole #panel. (I will remember my classes from my ids in future). If you don't want to get rid of .forumsidepanel for whatever reason, that's fine, but it doesn't need to have corners, it doesn't need a shadow and we can skip the horizontal rule and just make the bottom border 1px solid #444.

I'm pretty happy with the status quo, and I like the shadow. I do think the side bar should be on top of the nation banner though instead of beneath for the overlap. I don't really get why its so important to change it, and most of all why people want to change the default theme for everyone due to a few pixels, or because their opinion is more more valid than every other player who doesn't read every technical topic.
As always, I'm representing myself.

Those are tweaks to improve rift that we're suggesting really.

A radical overhaul would be nice, but I'm no designer. So.

...I would also like to some backward compatibility... >.>;; (No like buttons on Century or Antiquity).

Just a quick update... I've used stylish to fix that niggle.

Code: Select all
@-moz-document domain("nationstates.net") {
  .panelcontent{
    margin-right: 1px !important;

If we put things in hover or drag down menus, I would no longer be able to play the game. The sidebar menu is very good with screen readers, it's easy to navigate with keyboards, please don't change it.

Also, on the subject of vids in dispatches: getting rid of abuse is what mods are for. What's also really bad for screen readers if having to navigate away from a page you're reading to listen to something that's related to said page.

Coraspia, by default it would be open. As normal. (I'm also not advocating that we don't have alternative themes available...).

I don't have much experience with screen readers, not being visually impaired... there has to be a way to target css to screenreaders though... surely.

I think (and I would wholeheartly support) that Violet implement user friendliness in the form of making a stylesheet specifically for screen readers.

It isn't a case a "want", we should have this, we need to have this.
