Postby New Ducklands » Sun Jan 24, 2016 11:46 am

I do like the website theme and design but if you can do you think you can make a more modern theme since this seems to be looking like a website from 1990's. Also do you think you could add the feature of maybe even adding videos to dispatches?!? Thanks.

This is a forum thread were you guys can add suggestions on new features about the game I guess if you want to as well.

Videos are very deliberately excluded from being embedded directly into posts or dispatches. If you want to link to a video, you can post a link to it.

As to the rest, we need something a tad more specific than "make it more modern!" That's about as useful as saying something needs to be "20% cooler." It offers no direction or actual suggestion for what should be changed.

Also. I was surfing the internet in the 90s. The Rift theme for Nationstates is not anywhere close to the atrocities 1990s web design inflicted on the internet.

Ease of abuse, mainly. Though fewer people are on slow internet now than when the site first started, you can still lag even broadband internet if you have a boatload of videos embedded into a page. Requiring video content to be linked instead of embedded gives viewers better control over what they want to see and reduces the potential for abuse.

I honestly bet, someone would abuse this by putting in A 9/11 video

Much worse. Back when they first enabled video embedding (maybe 2005-2006?) on forum softwares (not NS, generally speaking), you could literally embed enough videos in a thread to the point anyone who loaded the thread would instantly get hit with a browser crash. Add on the fact that back in the day you could set YouTube videos to automatically play when you load the forum page and you have a trolls dream....or a users nightmare, depending on who you ask.

That exploit is actually still a thing on a few older models of vBulletin forums I think.

That said...we do need to move away from this "sidebar" fetish. Perhaps a much more minimalist interface for tablets.

Uh no...not quite to the extent of mobile...too narrow.

I'd say...put everything in the top banner. Have the following items
  • Notices
  • National
    • Issues
      Write (Factbook/Dispatches)
    • Telegram
    • Dossier
  • Regional
    • Direct Access to Admin here...
  • World
    • World Assembly
    • Activity
    • Forums
  • News
  • Settings
  • Store

Personally I'd combine News, Store, Settings under "Site" but well, meh.

THEN the sidebar...shrink it to a small dropdown panel underneath where it current says "Nationstates", with the words, "Quick List", which users could program themselves, perhaps autofilled with some useful links maybe? This would usually be minimized and would float on top of any content underneath.

I think that'd make it easier for some. (I know it would for me...)

In other words, what you get forumside when clicking the little "x" on the sidebar to switch to the top menu format instead?

This is the best thing in the world that I discovered by accident about 5 years ago. Seriously. If you haven't tried the top navbar, you (everyone-you) totally should.

Less cringe worthy though. That's not really a system I like the look of. I'd much rather have the top panel integrated into the top banner. Personally, instead of it being an x followed by a reload of the damn page. I'd prefer it to be Javascript. Open if you don't have javascript...but otherwise minimized just out of the way. leaving the screen uncluttered, clean

AND LINED UP PROPERLY....

Image

I mean come on... why does the side bar not line up with the name/flag at the top?

Then...look just above "Latest Forum Topics". It doesn't even line up with its own side bar, in fact it's staggered just slightly to the right. >_>

It's not like we really *need* latest forum topics by the way, we could scrap that, maybe relegate it to the "World" page instead as an actual item. Perhaps? Please? Anyone?

Sure it still can, how about if they do make it look more modern they put in settings (Like Now) the ability to switch it to this style if you do like it more.

That does mean that quite a lot of stuff would require two clicks/taps to reach each time instead of one, including (by your scheme) the most popular pages like Issues & Telegrams.

Enfaru wrote:I mean come on... why does the side bar not line up with the name/flag at the top?

Because nation names are different lengths.

The bottom edge of the panel just ever so slightly above latest forum topics.

One more thing. It's not entirely true that everything would have two clicks. I would imagine that the menus open on hover or drag down... but also the website should remember whether the sidebar drop down is open or closed. Users would be able to put in their favourite links.

So if they want to go to telegrams at any point, then they know it's always there. If they don't use telegrams but they do try to look for their own dispatches at a click of a button, then again, they can put that link in there.

Well, it's still two actions. And on mobile & tablets, there's no such thing as hover, of course.

True enough, but with the relevant items in that drop down (which should be auto-dropped just in case of no java-script) I would predict like things such as Telegrams such already be there as "Recommended link list" before they go ahead and change it to what they want.

O.o;; I'll go back to rift now. That was really bugging me. Now I'll just go and check wither the forum background (usually white) overlays the sidebar.... (that won't bug me so much).

I'm still hoping for customizable nation pages!

EDIT:

That...didn't get fixed for me, it's still disjointed. Firefox 43.04
