I'm not 100% sure if this is, like, allowed, especially since I've never seen a discussion type thread in Technical, but I'm going to give it a shot:

Today, I saw a red number over news. I read the news. There was some stuff about money, a server, a squirrel, but that's not what's important!

What's important is the teaser: "... it makes things load a little faster and gives us headroom for what I hope will be a really great update in the next few months."

ERMAHGAWD UPDATE COMING TO THE SITE YESH

*ahem*

I mean, cool, a new update on the way.

Now, the question:

What do you think we'll see!?

One major thing? A number of minor things? Some of the Summit changes (annexation or something)? Something entirely new? A major revision of an existing system? Something else?

Personally, I'd assume it can't just be a single GP-focused change, or else calling it a "really great update" in a site-wide news post would be overstatement to many It would be cool to see several rolled out at once, I think. Either way, we'll see soon enough!

Thoughts? Dreams? Hopes? What do you want to see? What do you expect to see?

Please refrain from debating the merits of ideas here, and if you spawn an idea not previously brought up by some chance, by all means move it to it's own new thread!

I doubt it will be annexation - but the Stamp Changes Cormac and co. talked about earlier I believe will be coming out then - or some variant of that.

The Squirrel is probably when everything went down a short time ago - when it went to far faster loading for a period of time - although the forums had some weird glitching last night - so it could have been then that they rolled it out.

Custodian also seems like it would be something that would come out in a big update - or something less R/D related. RO's might get a tweak - but that would probably happen outside of a big update.

Whatever it is - I'm looking forward to it.

With the message saying the change is more possible because of increased page load speed I don't see how it would be annexation or any of the other summit updates... Maybe it's wider use of image tags or a way to make region pages more customizable? Or perhaps new pages altogether like more graphs for the people/gov't/economy tabs that never came.

My hope would be some sort of increased ability to sort through regions to find all the WAs, or second highest endorsements, etc without using API or NS++. That'd be great.

I suspect it'll be changes relating to regions and their organisation. I think it'll be something to the effect of WAD no longer featuring so prominently and/or ability to rename – or in the case of the founder – replace the offices of founder and WAD.

May also be some tech changes, like stamps, as referenced above.

I mean, any new feature would potentially stress the servers more, no? I read it not so much as "faster server=we can do new things" with the phrasing of "more headroom," but more along the lines of it giving them the freedom to add new stuff without worrying about making things break

Do you think the Annex feature would put much strain on the server though? IDK, perhaps I don't know enough about how it works but it seems like something like embassies that is just a small field on a region wouldn't require that much. I was thinking something that would require referencing tons of different nation records all at once would be more power, as would the ability to change more stuff. *shrugs*

I suspect this forthcoming update will be the new in-game industries that the NationStates techies have been working on for some time now. New industries require new game code, new calculations, and more processing power. It makes sense.
