I'm being logged out again..

Postby Barringtonia » Mon Feb 08, 2010 6:40 pm

I've checked the first page and don't see a thread on this so...

I vaguely remember the log-out issue was something to do with the search feature, though I might be wrong.

First, the page never seems to fully load: Image

You can see in the URL bar, it's still loading as I type.

Second, I'll log in, generally through hitting 'Post Reply' and entering my nation name and password, start typing away and when I hit submit, even though my nation is logged in to the left, I'm logged out of the forum. It's not a case of typing a long essay for 3 hours, it's generally less than a paragraph. I've thus lost everything I wrote and I write in a Zen manner, I can't just re-write inspired perfection.

The page is still loading by the way...

For the moment, if I remember, I simply copy my text and paste if I have to log in again but it's bothersome, most bothersome.

That's strange. It doesn't seem to be a problem for me. Did you try restarting your computer? That seems to be the last resort for everything computer-related, so you might as well.

That's probably what you should do. You seem to have a Mac, so it's strange that there would be any problems. If you really want it to stop, like REALLY, you could take everything off the computer and completly re-load everything, but I've only ever done that with a Dell.

Set your account to auto login, that worked for me, and I have a mac.

Additionally, the loading issue only occurs when I'm logged in, not when I'm surreptitiously viewing the forum without having logged in.

I was just thinking it's been a while since I'd heard of any login problems.

Is there a way to make this happen every time, or does it (*shudder*) only happen on random occasions?

I've experimented a bit and I can't find a common trigger - I'll keep an eye out, the problem is I'm not remembering every action prior to every post and so I don't necessarily remember anything specific when it happens. I had the idea it was a tab issue and occurred when I opened a tab to look up information but, well no...

One thing I can say is that it will indicate I'm logged in both on the nation sidebar and the [clock image] Logout [Barringtonia] thing on the top right prior to submitting but then, when I do submit, up pops the 'you need to log in to reply' page.

1) check for auto login

2) Try using different servers (wired if possible)

3) Experiement with a different nation

4) Check for mac updates.

I think it might be a bug

Postby Usual People In Life » Tue Feb 16, 2010 5:19 am

To me that sounds like either you have a slow link to the ISP and/or nationstates, there is some kind of threat on your computer (even macs can be comprimised!) or you found a bug, never happens for me though.

Good thing you pointed it out though.

Cheeseelovakkia by the way is reporting that they can get onto nationstates but is also very slow!

I'm having the opposite problem - I recently found myself getting auto-logged-in in despite never having set my nation to auto-login. It just automatically toggled it on without me. I'm not sure if this is connected, but the mention of auto-login brought it up.
I wish I remember who wrote:Games like Nationstates are like a big cardboard box, and there are two kinds of people in the world. The kind who look at the empty void inside the box and ask "Where the hell is it?" and the kind who jump into the box with their friends and make it into a fort, or a spaceship.

solution for kandarin

kandarin: delete your cookies, that might work.

What do you think violet?

There are a whole bunch of things that could be happening, which makes it hard to pin down. In Kandarin's case it could be something like visiting nationstates.net instead of www.nationstates.net and having an autologin cookie left over from way back. But it's hard to know without me actually being on Kandarin's computer and checking the HTTP traffic.

Isolated, random login weirdness is pretty hard for me to investigate, but if there's anything repeatable you can tell me, where you get logged off every time you touch your nose and click my name for example, that would be very good to know.

Oftentimes, if I update/refresh the forums after being idle for a prolonged period of time (multiple hours) rather than starting on one of the basic NS.net pages (my nation, region, etc.), I am often logged out. However, as soon as I click on "home," it will load my nation page and log me in.

Not a huge concern as I've started to just click on my nation name to "reload" the forum page, but it would be simpler to just refresh as needed, if it doesn't require too much coding to fix.

That's intended behavior. Your session expires after 1 hour of idling. When logged out, auto-login does not activate unless you click the home banner (since otherwise it would be impossible to log out of a nation with autologin enabled).

Good to know - and easily "fixable" by clicking on my nation's name in the sidebar. Many thanks!
