Gameside server is DOWN! (update: now up)

Hi all! Our host has reported that our gameside server is under DoS attack and currently offline. We're probably looking at 6+ hours of downtime, possibly more... I'll post more when I know.

Update 1: Yes, we'll be down for at least six hours. Sorry, all! Time to do something else for a while. Maybe phone your mother? She probably misses you.

Update 2: Gameside is back up, but unreachable for many people due to a DNS change. You should, however, be able to log in now via the forums.

DNS propagation can take a while, depending on where you live and who your ISP is. It's usually within a few hours but can take 24-48 hours in extreme cases.

In some cases, it can help to restart your browser and/or computer. You can also try both the SSL version of the site (https://www.nationstates.net/) or the regular one (https://www.nationstates.net/) -- the one you don't normally use may work, because it forces your machine to fetch our new address.

If you are logged in currently and wish to continue using forumside I would advise against logging out. Without gameside functioning you can't log in.

Yes, the only way to stay logged in is to click around the forum, from one link to another, avoiding the browser's BACK button, bookmarks, or page reloads. That way the forum won't try to reauthenticate you with gameside.

Unfortunately once you're logged out, you can't log back in. Most people are in this situation.

Wow. I wonder why the DoS attack. Anyways, I won't be online for much longer tonight anyways as I am nearly done with work, an hour to go. I just hope it's back up when I go to log in tomorrow during the day.

I know you said game-side is back up but unreachable for some people. I'm one of those people. You lost me at the techy terms (DNS change)… Any idea when we should all be able to access game-side?

Unless you are very techy, you have to just wait. If you are very techy, and impatient, you can manually configure your computer/device to use one of our new IP addresses (e.g. 71.19.248.15) for "www.nationstates.net".

As you can see, the NPO also controls the Nintendo branch of NS, and have partial control of the PlayStation PS, Wii, and Commodore 64 versions. We don't want any part of the X-Box 360 version. All other NS servers are up excluding PC and mobile servers.

So that's why everything works fine except NS game side. I was fully prepared to blame my internet. Also, is there any reason why forum side would be running slowly?

IIRC forumside is on different servers, and login is handled through gameside. So when the attack occurred GS, those of us on FS were fine as long as we didnt log out. This meant if you were logged out, you couldnt log in. :/
