Suggestion: Captions for Banners

Postby Ponderosa » Sun Apr 19, 2015 2:49 pm

Title speaks for itself. Customized captions would be nice not only to describe how your banners represent your nation, but also to indicate whether or not you've taken the time to actually select your banners. Could we expect this to happen sometime in the future?

That's an interesting idea that I never though about. How do you think it should look? Having the text overlay on top of the banner, or having it on hover? Because right now I don't know how it would be implemented.

[note: not a techie]

Can you flesh your idea out a bit more? Where would you want the captions to appear, visually speaking? On hover, as a tool-tip? Directly on the banner itself? Below the banner ... like by the flag or ... where?

It's easy to say "I want this," but ... where would you want to put it? I don't see anywhere that it would flow easily, unless it's a tool-tip, which is unlikely to work for certain browsers/platforms.

Maybe a hover-over, top left or right? The lower part of the image is sort of blocked by the flag and the WA member tag. If hovers are too difficult, maybe it can just appear on the banner itself. The captions would be optional, for anyone who didn't want them.

The problem with putting it on the image itself is that it would (probably) need to be set to be a certain color. If you have a mostly dark/black image, it would need to be white. If it's a lighter/whiter image, it would need to be black. If it's got stripes or color variation, there's no single "good color" that would probably work well, in terms of contrast and look pleasing.

Again: not a techie, but for me, it seems like this would fall under the "nice to have but difficult to effectively/cleanly implement" category.

Maybe allow BB code in the caption? Or, make it so the text is always white with a black highlight, to get rid of the contrast problem?

I'm not a techie either, so I wouldn't know a ton about implementation.

I dont think having permanent caption would look good, plus you would need to choose one for every banner. Instead it could be implemented as an alt-text - you hoverover it and it shows a caption much like how when you hover over NationStates logo on top it says "Jennifer Government: NationStates"

That might work from a technical perspective, but maybe not an aesthetic one. Maybe it can work like the "Choose Banners" caption currently does? That one looks good except in stark white banners, and it's already been demonstrated to work.

This is what it might look like when your mouse hovers over the banner: http://i.imgur.com/6SNow5W.png

I know this was brought up in the original Rift thread -

A simple pop up box like
Image
Showing the standard description of the banner (i.e. "have an extremely large military" or whatever). Since it's not always apparent what others' banner are for, and it's painful (and potentially not possible) to look them up among your own.

It's not a custom field, but it is a caption, and I'd imagine it's require a lot less effort to make happen (and not create another field requiring moderation ;) )

I've actually been suggesting tooltips for banners since Rift was in Beta in December... but somehow it didn't really get noticed much enough.

Why not use the bottom part of the banner to write in a caption (as part of the image itself) ?

Even on the recommended size (1200 x 400) it is a real SOB to get your banner to show the bottom part of your banner. That's what size mine is and on my laptops it appears zoomed in greatly, while on my phone it shows the full 1200 x 400 (which seems weird, because if it was going to be different you'd think the phone would show less not more).

On a different puppet I tried to incorporate some text under a funny cartoon but just gave up on the text because it is so hard to figure out how to get it to display.

All suggestions are considered. Priorities are set depending on a number of factors, like whether a convincing argument has been presented in favor, possible downsides existing, side-effects, coding time required, etc...

But still, this must work. Maybe put some text on the top of the banner. Or maybe add text beside the banner with a rectangle.
