so, most times when you find one that doesn't exist, it says page not found, right? Like if you put in q24. SO I was trying things like !1, @1, etc. Those all came up with page not found. However, ?1 gives an "access denied" message instead. http://www.nationstates.net/images/banners/?1.jpg ...as do increasing numbers as such

Yeah, that's because the '?' is a special character when forming URLs.

Rather than asking for a resource called '?1.jpg' (usually an image), you're now calling http://www.nationstates.net/images/banners/ with a query string containing '1.jpg'.

I made an alternate version of my banners page*, sorted by filename, and have the following to say:
- A - Agriculture
- B - Buildings / Bureaucracy?
- C - Cities (dare I say...certifiably!

)
- D - Desolation / Destruction (that kind of theme)
- E - Economics
- EG - Easter eggs
- F - Forests
- G - Government
- H - Hostility (environmental)
- I - Industry
- K - Stumped by this! Kinetics? Knowledge? Know-how? Kingdom? There are four banners : 'Bike Lane', In My Sights', 'Protector' and 'Holy Warriors'.
- L - Landscape
- M - Military
- N - Probably just "Nanoscale"...
- O - Oceans
- P - Population
- Q - Maybe 'quota'? There's only one banner - "Birds of a Feather : Be endorsed by six nations at once"; the trend is for the filename's letter to match a theme in the image.
- R - Ruins
- S - Security (who was it that thought "SWAT"?

)
- T - Towns (most likely but some images don't quite convey that theme)
- TV - Television, thus entertainment, which is fitting for the lone banner regarding that domain
- U - Most likely 'Underground' (see 'No Rest for the Young' and 'Underbelly')
- V - Violet--the one true faith... c.f. various issues regarding the Violent Violets religious group.

- W - Worldly or Wacky? (Three banners)
- WA - World Assembly (only one banner)
- X - X-rated, in a 'top secret' / 'classified information' sense, not porn.
- Z - Ran out of letters and also couldn't use 'm' as 'miscellaneous' since it's already for 'military'?

* If I was really skilled in Web design, I'd have just one page but with different sort options. >:(

Haha. I love some of the names and descriptions for these banners: "Detrimental Externality' 'Sole Survivor' and Blue Sky Mine' being my favorites.

We are pretty sure we saw [violet] post somewhere we can no longer find just what the optimal custom banner sizes would be to accommodate the downsize that occurs.

Can that be reposted here?

Better yet, can there be a section on Banners be added to the Technical FAQ so everyone could find such information?

And, one more thing, how about putting a title attribute on the banners so peeps can see the names of the banners so they can look up banners they see on other nations?

IIRC, the majority of photos were either taken by a certain mod or taken from photobucket. You'd need official help on the former, but could try to find it yourself on the latter, where it may have a citation.

I have produced a slightly different dispatch to the one at the start of this thread on the 258 banners that are currently awarded/available as a result answering daily issues or that are earned as a result of developing your nation in a specific way. The dispatch in alphabetical order, is in full, wide-screen technicolor, and includes the daily issue # numbers for the newspaper headline pictures that match them.

Just FYI, those issue # pics aren't etched in stone. The Issue Editors can change them at will ... and they probably will.
